Is it worth staying as a 68W with no experience?

Is it worth staying as a 68W with no experience. My NCO says I should see what’s it like to be an actual infantry or field medic. I’m interested but I don’t want to disappointed again or told I’m not allowed to 90% of my MOS.

Experience comes with time. Your next assignment could find you in a Line Unit.

Every job in the Army, 90% of the time you're not doing your MOS. Most of the spent in the Army is Soldier skills like PMCSing vehicles, pulling staff duty, or laying out equipment.

What type of a Unit are you in now? I would assume a CSH or at a hospital. My career started at a CSH and I later PCS to Fort Hood to attach to a Route Clearance Company. Being on the line is completely different than being somewhere like a Clinic. You get to learn a lot about field medicine and you will spend long days in the field with the 11B, 12B, 13B ETC. You will also get to go to schools like BCT3. From my personal experience, being on the line has been one of the most humbling things I have ever done. I even got to deploy as a 68W

Medics have an awesome job in the Army. Most MOS’s get to train for their job day in and day out, and until war breaks they don’t get to do it. Medics get to do their job in hospital units or BAS’s. They also have roles with the other units, like infantry and combat engineers, where they train tactics day in and day out. But they still have that responsibility to their joes to take care of them medically. I enjoy being a “line” medic. I came from the Combat Engineers as a medic and now I’m a CA medic. If you want to be out in the dirt, learning tactics, weapons, explosives, and TCCC stuff then ask for a line unit. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to go that route!

See if you can achieve chest candy by preparing for the EFMB. Tough course and few pass, having that will be a great morale booster for you and respect from your fellow medics.
