There are many people that are looking at the current state of American society and they see stratification occurring at record levels, not just in our history, but relative to other countries around the globe.

Is the American Dream dead? Can we save it?

I am gonna say that it is fading. Money is not everything, but it is a big part of it. Education, medical stuff, etc. all costs a crap load more than it used to and income is not really matching par. I think that wealth gap is expanding...

But in addition, and in my opinion a much bigger concern, political correctness, lack in humility, etc. is all degrading our freedoms, individuality, and society. There will always be be the bad apples, but thanks to social media and the internet they are growing in number and organizing... and dragging others with them.

...maybe it is not as bad as I think it might be, but I feel we should all see it that way in order to improve the situation regardless and ensure it never gets that bad.

It is a dream, an idea of what is desired. As long as people desire, it is not dead just may be unattainable for most.

It's alive and well, CW2 Joseph Evans. I - and a lot of other vets - are living proof of that! We may not be millionaires, but we don't have to be. I think I'm living the American Dream, day by day.

PS: I think the author of that article, and many others, want to blame "lack of economic opportunity," which I think is a cop out. I grew up in a poor family, but I was taught values, the importance of education; and my parents instilled in me a drive to be and do the best I possibly could. I didn't have "economic opportunity" coming out of the chute (high school), but I knew I had to make my way. And I'm not saying that I'm "living the dream," but I do believe I'm living the American Dream. I disagree with folks who say some are being denied the opportunity to reach the American Dream.
