It is up to command and personally, I prefer sleeves down and would not authorize in my command for a number of reasons. If you have deployed, the benefits of sleeves down are understandable. Sleeves up in the fall in Germany made quite a difference between warm and cold. Top Barrett was very adamant about sleeves up or sleeves down. And from 79 thru 82 it was his call period. Thus I don't do it. I also think the whole appeal of rolling was lost once it became so commonplace and it was no longer new and exciting. It is a pain to unroll sleeves everyday for formation and then reroll them. The way they are rolled, it becomes tight against the skin, and doesn't allow for the flow of air around the body, specifically, the core. This means that warm air is trapped against your body with less points of exit. It looked awesome. Starched uniform and shined boots. I hated all the up keep but it looked professional. Then I joined the guard in 2006, Wrinkled up ACU's with shitty sand colored boots, I think we looked like a bunch of homeless guys that raided a surplus store. Still press my BDU top to wear for my little girl at her Veterans Day breakfast, that with blue genes looks better then those damn ACU's. And we never got to roll the sleeves. Of course we never got to use the hood on our old winter pt uniform either, Post General said that the hood up was unauthorized. If it’s hot, they roll their sleeves! They don’t wear these dumb ass reflector / PT belts! If something makes sense, they do it without worrying about stupid crap. I was driving home today, FT Leonard Wood, 93 degrees out, and see a group of Soldiers marching, sleeves down, but their pants cuffed and rolled...WOW! It will take a generation for these commanders / CSM’s with this nonsensical mindset to fade away and retire but sadly I won’t be around for it.
