For them, they can either track operations (stay within their MOS) as a MSG or they can track "command" (leave their MOS) as a 1SG. Once this promotion to 1SG is made, they will never go back to their MOS and will only be considered for SGM (our equivalent of CSM), whereas the MSG will only stay in their MOS and only be considered for MGySgt (our equivalent of SGM). For example, an an E6, my title was CTR1 (which is one of many in the CT community).<br /><br />Certain jobs will merge, for example Aviation Boatswain's Mates have three specialties (ABF (fuel), ABH (handling), and ABE (equipment)), but at the E-9 level, they become AB. For example, and ABFCS (E-8 senior chief) becomes an ABCM (E-9 Master Chief).<br /><br />Also, the Navy draws from qualified E-9s to fill slots like Command Master Chief, Force Master Chief, Fleet Master Chief, and MCPON irrespective of "MOS".<br /><br />TL;DR: The Navy does it at the E-9 level sometimes.
