Is the F-35 up to the CAS mission to a level that will leave Soldiers and Marines comforable with the A-10's retirement? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/is-the-f-35-up-to-the-cas-mission-to-a-level-that-will-leave-soldiers-and-marines-comforable-with-the-a-10-s-retirement <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Can the F-35 handle CAS to the level of the A-10, how about a shoot off. Four of each type aircraft to support troops in contact for a solid 24 hours. Judging based on accuracy, target effects, loiter time, number and duration of gaps in coverage, and total ordnance expended. Give the A-10s an "in theater" airfield 200 miles away for reloading and the F-35 will be flown from 500+ miles away to simulate the closest the brass would ever let it be based from the Theater of Operations. The 35 is an air-to-air platform that the DoD is trying to force into a CAS platform. It is a quagmire. ESPECIALLY seeing as the current CAS platform is far superior...and has been for decades!!! The F-35 will never match the A-10 in terms of CAS ability, loiter time, and ability to withstand damage from ground fire. Capt Jeff S.
