If we ignored them, they'd mostly just be a threat to their own people, and make life difficult for our allies in the region with their terror.

They are a "threat" to us only in that they can kill or threaten handfuls of people at a time; they can make us look incompetent or throw us off our game, so to speak, but if we really, really wanted to we could just isolate ourselves from the region and let them burn themselves out. Of course, we'd take a serious political hit by doing so, because we'd be seen letting our allies hang in the wind and allow refugees to be killed, imprisoned, raped, enslaved, etc.

We have to be careful with dealing with ISIL/Daesh. If we treat them like too much of a serious enemy, we raise their status. Others who dislike America will see this and think, "aha, so that's how it's done!" and we'll have no end of trouble. Or, if we don't take them seriously enough, the situation festers. There are no easy answers.
