I’ve been in the Army for about 3 years now, Marines for 5 and since I came in 2010 I’ve noticed a HUGE influx of people using their job for clout and peers at work who will not shut up about what they do but produce half ass results. Seems like the question, I don't think you will hear from too many silent professionals. I can talk to you because I got my job done, did my best, and felt like I was paying my way, not a lot of medals, good fun stories but served in a time that nothing was going on. This said because I volunteered ten years of my life that didn't amount to a chest full of medals. I also didn't play politics my attitude was it was beneath me as a public servant. I did find other ways in life to feel I did my best and it means something to others and I get that little boost from being the "bad ass" but I have learned in my strolls around the block that being humble, living and believing there are others better than you, keeps you doing your best and not giving two fucks what the peacocks are doing. Really, the reality and understanding that you are only as good as the last thing you attempt should always keep you honest. Remember this my young friend, if this is bothering you,,,, you might be missing out on some of the humble I am referring to, which might say something about your ego. A well tempered "player" knows that the damned always roll in "fame and fortune" till they don't, then the "steady eddy, dog faced soldier, silent professional" seems to be humble, has what he needs and does not want, is prepared and always ahead, steps over the fodder and keeps moving forward. I want to tell you, good share, I am sorry you are feeling this way, answer is everyone on this platform has felt this way at one time or another even if they are guilty of being those you speak of. There are no limits to the level of humans that are have felt your pain, till you wake up and realize, you are that silent professional. You are no longer employed, you serve others or your country, you wake up and you are you doing what you do. You don't mentally have to "make" anything. You simply do your thing at what ever times and meet all challenges with a mind set of solving this problem is yours to do. Then you too will be the silent professional. Unfettered by the peacocks that flap around and fan their tail feathers, at the end of the day being a meal for the silent professional. That said, I've also personally seen and experienced everything you've mentioned, particularly with those who tout themselves constantly and see them advance ahead. So here's what I've learned over the years: It's important for you to remain humble and a silent professional, but to also know how to market and sell yourself *when* appropriate. It's one of those things where moderation means everything, and so long as you live your life leaning more on the silent professional side but with the occasional minute into the spotlight, then you'll go far in life.

A good example of this is your experience in the Army. Be a silent professional for 6 months, then get your 5 min of spotlight when going over your NCOER before going right back to silent professional mode. Next time an opportunity shows up, either in the Army or civilian side, you can use your stack of NCOER's as marketing material to blow anyone else out of the water, and because you've actually done the work, your bullets will stand in case anyone decides to challenge your work.
