The US Military has had the similar challenges throughout its history. Allowing black soldier to serve, then allowing them to be in combat, and finally integration where they were equals. How about sexual orientation. When I first joined just saying you were gay was enough to get you discharged. Then "don't ask, don't tell" and finally being able to openly serve and dress as you identify. Women have had their challenges. Not being allowed to serve, to only being allowed to be nurses, to non-combat roles, to serving in combat in non-combat units, and women serving on combat ships. Now we are looking to integrate into combat MOS roles.

Everyone of these challenges was met with resistance from both the military and civilians, yet they are all are thought of as the norm now. Nobody looks twice at a black fighter pilot, but in 1935 it was unheard of. The US military has always been professionals and when the order comes down to integrate females in combat units it is going to happen, no matter who does not like it. Then 10 years from now people are going to look back at our time in service and wonder how we could think that women were not capable of serving in combat roles, just like we thought about our grandfathers military stigmas about being black or gay. Although Seabees are not front line warriors, we've been coed going on 27 years. I recall times in the badlands where everybody was much more comfortable having Lori tapping the paddles on Ma Duce as she was an artist with it. Think she was 100 dripping wet with a Barney Fife dog tag chain, but you wouldn't want to mess with her. Same went for Beth manning the tubes. Good women pick up the knack just as fast as the guys. Lori and Beth would just cuss a bit differently when they were in the zone. You just enjoyed the show. CAPT Kevin B. The decision has been made. We already seen how this exact thing plays out when the Women's Army Corps (WAC) was disbanded in 1978 and the units integrated. I do believe with time we will be more accepting. I think right now, it's still early. I remember back in a few years back assigned in a mechanized infantry, it was like people were talking about getting out the army, or reclassifying to different branches to avoid having to deal with a female. I was truly shocked and disgusted hearing that. Ultimately, females will be assigned to those typical all-male units regardless and hopefully leadership help soldiers to understand the BIG picture in all of this. Everybody brings something to the table regardless of race, gender or religious background. Something that EO rep and leaders alike, will have to ensure those policies are upheld. What we are not ready to accept is a softer touch that often accompanies such an idea, and a lowering of standards openly, or a lowering of standards being enforced quietly so as to not hurt anyone's feelings that failed to make the cut.
