Reading the article, it sounds like the young Soldier is in AIT and requested leave which is command granted. He attended his mother's wedding wearing his Class A and I noticed he only had his National Defense Service Medal on his jacket.

So is the US Service Ribbon still issued or did they do away with it finally? Chances are he isn't allowed to wear it yet until he is done with AIT. The Army Service Ribbon is not awarded just for joining the Army. It is awarded for becoming qualified in an MOS. (I guess they felt that calling it the "Army Military Occupational Specialty Qualification Ribbon" was too long a name for a low ranking award.) If the soldier was in AIT he, by definition, had not completed his MOS training yet and, therefore, was not entitled to the Army Service Ribbon. You may be thinking of the Army Service Ribbon which is still issued. MSG John Duchesneau Sun, 23 May 2021 23:58:11 -0400 2021-05-23T23:58:11-04:00 2019-02-13T11:52:31-05:00
