I'm seeking a mentor in Military Healthcare--particularly, a Psychologist, who can speak to how I can optimize my chances of qualifying for the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). I'm a reservist w/an educational background in Communications/Marketing who wants to use my Post 9-11 GI Bill to go back for a BS in Psych, MA/PhD en route to a career in Clinical Psych. Taking all pointers!

All the Recruiter is going to do at this point is to "plant the seed" of some basic info, since you are still several years from applying for HPSP. Your GPA in the BA and your GRE score are going to be crucial in getting into an APA accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology. If you have other questions I'd be happy to answer from the Army side of HPSP clinical psychology. I recruited lots of people for the scholarship before using it myself to shift my career to clinical psych.

MAJ (Join to see) - thank you so much for your response, sir, and I appreciate your openness to further questions--I'm sending you a "connect" request right now! :) Per your advice, I'm going to focus on building that rock solid GPA for now...and you've already answered another question I had; so, a B.S. isn't required in order to pursue clinical psych, after all...would it matter if I obtained the B.A. from an online university?

You may only need certain pre-req courses in Psych if you already have a BA. I had a BA in Philosophy and took the basic pre-reqs for my MA in Counseling Psych. I then completed my MA and made a smooth transition to the PsyD in Clinical Psych. It may be possible for you to take the pre-reqs for the PsyD/PhD now and skip the MA/MS. This would be contingent upon your previous undergrad GPA and the GRE score as mentioned by MAJ Rakow. Best of luck to you.

...and then, the light bulb suddenly came on. Lol My previous Google searches didn't return any results for Air Force AMEDD recruiters; but I tried it one more time upon reading your post--seems that the new Air Force site's "Find a Recruiter" page has an option to let you specify "Healthcare Student or Professional" as part of the search criteria, which produces a unique e-mail address for aspiring HSP's to use. It may have always been this way, but I didn't notice it before. Anyhow, thanks SFC (Join to see)!

CPT W - that sounds great. After retiring I went back to school on a similar path. I completed a BS in Family Studies (poverty, addiction, and life skills focus) in prep for graduate school (maybe). As for MA be careful in selecting a program that offers clinical supervision. Some distance and hybrid programs don't and that will effect your ability to get credentials say in addiction treatment or as an LPC. Though an HPSP scholarship would definitely get you in a fantastic education pipeline. As for my own experience working in the mental health/addiction domain, my intermediate-term goal is to complete my CAC (Addiction Counselor) Level 2. Longer term would be a PsyD versus a PhD. My own preference is clinical versus research. Best of luck!
