I have good insurance but when I travel to see one of my 3 sons serving, it would be nice to have a id card. Didn't know I missed having a veterans id until I had to wait until my son got off work to get onto housing,AFTER driving from NC to Texas! Anyone?

VA Health Care system ID card isn't going to get you through the gate, unless there is a VA Health Care center on the installation.

Um, your son lives in housing in Texas? So he is married?  His wife can come to the gate and get you a visitors pass so you don't have to wait.  Some installations allow the member to call ahead and give the details over the phone, and then when you arrive you just present your information and they give you the visitors pass then, without the sponsor actually being present.

The only way to have a Military ID after service is if you are retired from the military and receive a pension. The VA card is only good at a VA facility. On some post you need a visitors pass and who ever you are visiting has to arrange that for you, I know it it can be aggravating, but it keeps our military and their families safe.

Thank you 1SG. I agree 100%. With 3 sons and their wives serving, couldn't agree more

If you are 100% permanent and Total, OR 100% Unemployable Permanent and Total, you qualify for the Uniformed Services ID Card with full base privileges. Only thing the Retired have over this is Space A Travel (which Congress approved in 2015 but never sent the MEMO on how to administer the program). The ID Card is DD FM 2765. It looks similar to the Dependents ID Card

I just want a card to show I'm a veteran. Some places make offers to veterans but with proper ID and I'm not sure if they'd recognize my NGB22 form.

SPC. Hartsell, you can go to the VA Hospital to get your VA ID card, you must pass your MEANS test for that, even though you have insurance you can still use the VA hospital any where across the USA.

The Means test will let you know how much copay you will have to pay if need to.

If you had a VA Card before, and rejected the VA by having them take you out of the system, then you will have to attempt to discuses that with them, because once your out , your out. The VA will let you know what you will need to get your VA Card.

If you have 100% Disability service connected you will not need to pay copay

By the way a MEANS test is nothing more then how much you earned, so bring in your TAX documents and your DD214 with you, you don't have to use the VA to have a VA ID card, but in case you need to, it is good to have it. By the way all Veterans whom use the VA are exempt from the OBAMA mandatory medical insurance that will take affect this year, Spouses of veterans are not.

There's no longer a need to carry your income information with you. When you apply for benefits thru the VA they will contact the IRS to determine whether you need to make a co-pay.

In fact, you no longer need to go to the VA to apply for benefits. Simply go to the VA website and look up the 1010EZ form (that's the ten ten Echo Zulu form for you occifers). I beleive you can ignore the requirement for finance info....but if I'm wrong, don't be shy about notifying me. Another alternative is to go to any VFW and ask for a Veteran's Service Officer (VSO). For that matter just about any veterans organization (DAV, American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association, etc.) will either have a VSO or know where and how to find one. Actually, the easiest way to find your local VSO is to go to any VFW website. Most of them have a phone number to contact someone in need. I don't know your particular situation, but as previously noted, VA health care meets the ACA (Obama Care) requirements - even with a co-pay.
