If you plan to live and work in California, it would be best to find a class out of there as Cali has some unusual nuances. A good portion of EMT classes you do the online material, show up to class maybe once a week, test for hands on testing at the end, and then take the national written (for EMT-B). However, you are not trained as an FMF or Combat Medic. Some think it is glorious work. It is not glorified, it is hard. It is hard watching people die when you have done all you can to save their life and then some.

If you are serious about changing careers you have to be ALL IN. You want to be at least a Paramedic, but going after your RN or PA will also set you up for a diverse healthcare life.

Also, if you are serious about crossing over into healthcare, I'd begin NOW by speaking to the most senior HM at your location and see what it would take for you to cross deck into HM rating. Instead of spending two months looking for "an online course" get some "hands experience" under the supervison of HMs, Drs and Nurses who can train you. If you are serious don't go on liberty every day, but volunteer with them to learn what they do, really learn what they do. If you are willing stay a little longer in the Navy and go to HM "A" school with immediate follow on in HM 8404 (aka FMF Corpsman) "C" School and complete the CCCC (Combat Casuality Care Course) then doing a degree completion program in Nursing or Physician's Assistant would be simpler.

If you think being a medic is easy, then you are making the wrong choice for the wrong reason, but if your heart and your head are in sync, and you are willing to be an angle where other dare not tread - then go for it. I was an AT2 when I learned about an EMT-B program at the Naval Hospital. My classmates were all active duty corpsmen and civilian ambulance personnel. I was alone in my quest for a medical education. When I pointed out my concern to the instructor, he responded “Okay, come work with me in the ER and on the ambulance and I will teach you what you need to know.” So, I dod my 12-on and 12-off Dufy shifts at the air station and then spent hours and hours in the ER with Frank. I learned to Start IV lines, suture, cast broken limbs, read x-rays, interpret lab tests, etc. When I met with the Commanding Officer of the air station with my request to cross-rate to HM from AT, I had 27 letters of recommendation from doctors, charge nurses, and the XO and CO of the Naval Hospital. My CO gave his blessing and write an additional letter to BUPERS supporting my request to cross-rate to HM.

I was on the USS Kitty Hawk when I found out that the Navy had approved my request. I asked the ship’s Chief Medical Officer to give my reenlistment oath and I was off to HM-A school in San Diego.

I graduated class honor man and began my career as a “Doc.” I was was a Marine brat of a career enlisted Marine that served in WW11 including lwo Jima, Guadalcanal , and Saipan, amongst others.

The bottom line is to work you ass off to follow your. It would take me hours to describe the very convoluted and lengthy road that led to my degree that earned me the right to be called “Doctor.”

Don’t give up - continue to push forward until you achieve your goal. Emergency Technology I and Emergency Technology II are generally combined, where you can earn 6 Credit Hours at the college level.

But I’m uncertain if such coursework is available, Online?

That’s because of two factors:
1.) There are “Hands-on” Practicums that are parts of the
coursework.

2.) There are usually two final
Objective Tests, one at the local
County level. And the other at the
State level.

The County Test is generally proctored by the faculty that teaches the coursework.

And the State Test is generally proctored by State Officials.

Obviously, any tests or examinations taken Online, would be unable to be proctored!

Personally speaking, I would not want for an EMT or Paramedic who has commuted plagiarism on an exam, in order to “qualify” for his or her credentials.

Furthermore, I certainly wouldn’t want for anyone who has done so, to be performing any form of advanced First Aid or Life Saving procedures on myself, a loved one or any other individuals who may be unconscious and non-responsive, bleeding severely +/or having internal injuries, especially any broken bones!

An individual who is most likely
incompetent to pass the exam and of the fact, they are willing of being unethical and libel for cheating!

That can lead to some serious litigation not only against the unqualified EMS employee, but as well the agency he or she may be employed by.

In conclusion, I would recommend
that you look into a variety of local colleges within your state, to see if they may offer an Online Program of what you are seeking.
But you may further inquire when and where would you need to report to in order to take both your Practicums and your final
exams.

They may have the local Fire Department affiliated with the college’s Online Program?

I simply believe, if by all means possible, I’d recommend that you take your EMT courses, Practicums and exams in a classroom setting.

The EMS Programs include Adjunct Professors, e.g. various Specialty M.D.s, who come in to lecture to the class. That may not necessarily be offered Online?

I hope I was able to answer your concern?

Best of Luck with your future endeavors!

Sincerely,

“Doc” TJ
NAVY HM-2/FMF, Vietnam
Assoc.
