I do know (and some will say I am being critical of Senior NCOs) when I say: It is a SHAME that there is not it is because there is a great need for Senior NCOs to share and influence those coming up in the ranks. It is most important to leave a "Legacy" for others to build upon when it comes to Character Building, Pride, Traditions, Courtesy, Heritage and History. I believe that there is a break down on what some of the goals of a Senior NCO should "BE' and "DO" as they reach towards the top of that ladder. I have been disappointed, for the most part, in Senior NCOs because of the lack of "Care and Concern" for those below them. I have numerous times met or crossed paths of Senior NCOs that were all out for themselves. Not everyone, but a greater majority than I would be proud of boasting about. When we leave the Service, when it comes our time, if we have not made an impression on some younger Soldiers to carry the above noted points, then all we have is what will be hanging on our "Love Me" wall for no one but ourselves to look at. I want to be remembered by those I have left an impression on. I have two Sons that I have left that type of impression on. They have both served. One is still serving and they have said; it was because of my influence. I know that is an extreme, but it has been such an encourager to me knowing that I have made an imprint on their lives in such a manner. "Mentorship, Coaching and Leadership"! In many ways, we have lost grip on those traits after the early 1980's. YES! There should be an Organization where Senior NCOs can come together to share and promote those traits and build the Bonds of the NCO CORPS! I can't wait for the "critiques". We have junior enlisted organizations, Top 3 organizations, Chiefs Groups, and others where we learn, mentor, and give back to both our enlisted and civilian communities. We do not "board" people for membership--we feel that leadership begins with followership and volunteerism--because we "praise" performance, but we "promote" potential...and potential = all those extra things you can do on top of your every-day good job. Our organizations are not meant to be "elite" ... they are meant to draw in, round, stretch, and instill confidence in people who like to be tested by their peers and superiors in a non-attribution environment. We don't have "Audie Murphys" in the Air Force...we have unsung leadership heroes who lead from the front, train/prepare their replacements, and move to the next objective with positive attitude, constant initiative, and achievement as their only reward. It's a multi-level program that starts at unit level, every year, works its way up through type command, force and fleet level and finally the CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) level. It's a very, VERY competitive thing and the four that get named Shore and Sea SOY (active and reserve) put on E-7 automatically. But, no, it's not like the Order of Audie Murphy. I had a little bit of contact with that at one of the units I served with in Afghanistan, and it's a very big deal to the Soldiers involved with it. Was good in allowing the "word to get around" a lot faster and more accurately. It also was great in understanding what each field brought to the table, and how to work on improving relationships, including race-relations. Too bad it didn't spill-over to our current situation in the States.
