I was on the volunteer list, I'd mentioned that on here a few times, for Operation Desert Shield/Storm, I wasn't used, I got an appreciation letter for being on the list, I just became too iil, unfortunately. One of the guys in the Pentesocstal church we go to did get to go, every major holiday, the pastor of the church taps him, me, and one of the assoc pastors who'd been in the NY ARNG during avietnam, he just was never called up, to hold the flags, I just obviously find myself envious. I suppose I'll always ne that way, I've told these stories also, my wife's dad got a Bronze charging a minefield with a battlefield promotion in Army artillery in France going into Germany in the 90th Div at the Moselle River during te Battle of Nancy under Patton, he'd never speak about it much, my wife and mother in law tell me, which I gather was pretty typical of that period, certainly, we also have the actual handwritten penciled citation written by his Lt Col for the Bronze, he was lost before she and I met, he was very active VFW. My wife's stepdad was Navy combat destroyers and destroyer escorts WW2 and Korea, Pacific, the whole thing, all of it, kamikazes, shelling, strafing, freezing cold northern Oacifc weather off the Korean coast, VFW also. My dad's sister's husband, one of my uncles was one of Eisengphower's radio operators in the 3118th Signal Svc Battalion/GRP, from before D Day all the way through the German surrender at the little red schoolhouse in Reims, Germany. He actually saw Gen Eisenhower at Southwick House at SHAEF HQ, knew SSgt Mickey Keogh, the enlisted aide to Gen Eisenhower, saw Gen Patton, Gen Brasly, FAdm King, Capt Kay Summers by, the drive to Gen Eisenhower, and personally with others sent the Telex of the German surrender to Gen Marshall, swiping a flimsy copy as a cpsouvenir which my cousins, his sins, still have, that he and my aunt had on display in the Valley Stream, NY public library every Meml Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day, for sevl decades, it's in a safe deposit box, I've been dying to have it donated to the apNatl Archives or the WW2 museum or the WW2 memorial in DC. I thuink about all that, and it obvioisly nags at me, the guy at the church was USMCR, he was there for SCUDs, the whole thing with going into Iraq, frankly, I dont kmow what to think anymore, as I recall all that. My Dad was deployed sevl times to the USS Block Island in the Carribean during Korea, nymlate brother in law was KC-135 mechanic and refuel boom operator aircrew in SAC during Vietnam in USAF, I also reflect on that. One day, I was at a VA hospital by us, I had to go to an admin office about something, one of the staff called me over, a woman, I sat down at her cubicle, and noticed a photo across from me on the other side of the cubicle, I was sitting facing it. The photo turned out to be te same photo I'd seen someplace else I also had coccasion to go to, so I recognized it, the photo was of one of the recent MOH posthumous awardees, I realized the woman helping me was evidently his mom, I gathered. I lpjust looked at the photo, pointed at it, and said, in kind of a weird awestruck voice, "Is that....?" She nodded...I just kind of stodd there thunderstruck, you'd all kmow who it was, were I to mention who, and just said, ' I dont even know what to SAU to THAT....."

She, for her part, entirely understood, we chatted while she helped me with getting me the papers I needed, I told her how I recognized the photo, where I'd seen it before...she said I needn't have that turn of mind about it, I said what I'd done was piddling, infantile, too too p, gah gaj, by contrast. She said, word for word, that he wouldn't have thohght that, I said, 'Yeah, but that was him, I know better, obvioisly.....' She entirely understood, of course, I told another in the hospital I chatted with later about meeting her, he said he'd also seen the photo, everyone in the hospital knew she was there as staff, which I found interesting, certainly. I also had occasion once to sit with my unit CO, am O-6 who was waiting to pin on O-7, I'd surprisingly gotten a certificate from him for an IG inspection I'd helped with, I sat with him for about an hour solid, I was struck, as I've said on here, by the sheer, raw overpowering, overawing power of the man, I only learned later that as an O-2 FAC pilot in Vietnam, he'd flown 150 combat mission. Another O-6 in another unit I was in quite literally had so much fruit salad, he was allowed to overflow it from the left side to the right on his coat, the only time I ever saw that. I also twice saw the O-9 commanding my installation, he passed me in his car once as I was driving in the opposite direction, I saluted in stunned a!aze!ent, he returned it, I was so taken aback I didn't kmow what else to do, I think I did it purely out of shocked sense of self-preservaton, as I think back about it. He'd been a B-17 tail Gummer who'd gotten into West Point after WW2, while he'd been USAAF, then went USAF after graduating. I once spent a whole day with the O-6 commander of my installation, a Capt I'd been assigned to had !e do it, he submitted me to get te exposure, I was obvioisly minding my Ps and Qs, at one point he Col called out "Young man" to an airman by the installation command briefing, that was the other time I saw the O-9, and corrected the uniform of the airman, which I found d singularly enlightening as to how he went about it. I've met two Apollo astronauts, one as an O-9 I momentarily got to ask a question of, whole I'd been at USAF OTS, the other after I'd gotten out, he was giving a presentation at a school nearby my family on Long Island, I got to meet him for a few seconds. So, to get back to your question, having given all that by way of perspective, do I wish I'd gone? Yeah, obvioisly. Can I change it now? Obviously not. Does it gnaw at me more than triflingly? Certainly. Will it always? Equally certainly. What do I think of as I reflect on it so much later? Quite honestly, beyond sheer envy, which I quite frankly, freely admit, I dont kmow what to think, honestly. A good fried of myself, my wife, and !y mother in law, we'd go over to play card with him and his wife. He was USAF on the group d as C+130 aircrew in Vietnam, he told !e a story once about how the plane he worked on was almost shot down by a SAm, the pilot suddenly banked to swerve out of it's way, throwing him across the aircraft, he's got most likely Agent Orange damage, he lost his wife a few urs ago, I kind of just sit back and absorb his story in awe...I !ran, what else can I do? Do I wish I'd have some of the real thing to equally reflect on? Certainly, I'm as human as the next. My uncle told me this funny story once, he'd been graduating fro Columbia Univ on the GI Bill when Gen Eisenhower was president there, before running g for office. Most of the others getting their diplomas on the steps of the Columbia main library were ex-GI, everyone was terrified, as the General was handing them out with am aide personally on the steps. You should realize that relatively few members of the Armed Forces find themselves in "combat", and there are reasons for that. Unless you are in a "combat arms" MOS, rating or designator, there are very low odds you will ever be forced to find an answer to this question.

If you do ultimately choose (and succeed in) that path, the first "fight" will be within; to become part of something greater than yourself, to find...then surpass your own limits, and learn the skills you will need to understand the real implications of what you're asking.

Is it "wrong" to want to fight? I think anyone involved in those communities will agree that without some level of positive aggression, it is unlikely you'd ever be one of them. However, I've never known a true "warrior" who didn't experience pain and loss. "War" is the total breakdown of what makes mankind great...not something that adds to his greatness. When compassion, dignity and humility fail us, it sometimes requires good men to endure and even do very bad things...becoming one of them never comes without a high cost; both personal, and to those closest to them.

My advice would be to consider a man you may or may not have heard of; Mr. Rudyard Kipling. He was famous in his own lifetime as a writer and poet...one who praised courage, heroism and devotion to one's nation. At the outbreak of World War I, Kipling became one of the leading voices encouraging Britain to enter the conflict against Germany...a conflict he himself would not (like any of the many other conflicts he praised) personally fight in.

However, his son John would.

John Kipling was denied entry into the Royal Navy for poor eyesight, then denied enlistment in the Army for the same reasons. His famous father then used his connections to secure John a commission in the Irish Guards. Perhaps having grown up in the shadow of "Gunga Din"...or perhaps due to his own predilections, John became a young officer tasked with leading troops at Loos in France in 1915. He was last seen by his men, wounded, and stumbling forward into the German guns. His body was not recovered until 1992. He was only 18 when he died.

I'm sure Rudyard Kipling was haunted by every line of prose he ever wrote extolling the "virtues" of conflict. Not only do you have to deal with those around you getting hurt and killed, you have to actively try to kill other human beings. And even in a justified war, that can leave a mark on anyone. Then there's watching the displaced civilians deal with the death and destruction you're bringing to their home. It is not wrong to want to fight. As a veteran and retired Army officer (and former Viet Nam Era Marine) I see it this way: We have a strong military because we want to deter war in the first place; however, once they are forced upon us, it is our job to fight them and to win. I trained to fight in Viet Nam but didn't get to go and went to another country but we did contribute to the war effort. When I went to places like Haiti, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, I felt I was actually accomplishing what I was paid and trained to do. Additionally, it is a leader's obligation to go to war to support his/her fellow Soldiers or service members - To help them come home to their families alive! I did what my father did in WW II and Korea and I think it is a good thing to fight when there is a war our nation chooses to engage in, period. The best way to end a war quickly is to engage in "total war" and be so good at our jobs that we achieve victory and deter others not to challenge us. I told all my guys this:
Proverbs 24:14 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice.
Be ready to stand with your battles. But if you make killing your goal, you'll screw up your head. Your a disciplined professional that carries a weapon. Make your goal to be the most knowledgeable, disciplined and professional soldier.
