Is there such a thing as free storage while on deployment?

There are storage options depending on where you reside. Each situation is different. If you live off post and are not receiving BAH, likely not. If you live in the barracks your unit has the responsibility. If you are authorized off post housing and single likely yes. You need to speak to your S1 and the transportation office. Your unit should also know these answers based on its deployment order.

We always packed up all the barracks residents property and put it in storage during deployment. Is this no longer a thing?

When I was active, we signed an inventory of our barracks room contents and the room was sealed and left under the control of Rear D. If a roommate was not deploying, they would be moved and paired with other non deployables. I am surprised you have enough stuff to need a storage unit

While single, there were options for storage for me. I had to pay up front and seek reimbursement (vehicle). For storage of home goods, my understanding was the Army would pay BAH or storage but not both. I doubt free.
While stationed in NY, there was a local one that constantly did business with soldiers on the base and it wasn't far from it. I set up automatic payment and the guy gave me paperwork that if something happened he would still store our things and we could work it out when I got back. That, in my opinion, is an awesome way to support the military.

All jokes aside, when I deployed the unit offered household goods storage. Y’all to your command, you may be able to work something out.

I know I was reimbursed for my car storage while overseas. And my belongings were stored for me at a nearby naval base.
