If AR 670-1 does not have a clear answer, then you need to check DA Pam 670-1. But, as an FYI, I have a flag on my backpack and my BN CSM never said anything to me.

I was at a snack bar yesterday with my old MOLLE GEAR ARMY BACKPACK on with American flag and Army name tag on the back of the bag some made a comment "are you a Patriotic person?" I said "NO" It's just ARMY thing I guess. Proud to be American.

AR 670-1 shows and describes the placement of the flag as being on your right sleeve. The fact that it doesn't say anything about it going on a backpack or anywhere else in itself means that it doesn't belong there.

As a retired CSM I will say that one of my pet peeves all my time in the Army was with those who stated that something was "against regulation" when in fact they didn't know or were wrong. One of the great things I find with the internet is that regardless of rank you can usually find what in fact the Reg is along with all kinds of other info on awards etc. One word of caution however is to be sure you are viewing the latest version of the regulation as they do change!!

Former Sergeant here. I can only speak from my experience. The correct response is "Roger, Segeant Major" then make the suggested correction. I don't want to do the paper work or research if i get put on blast because of an uppity Soldier on my team. End of the day, I'm accountable for my Soldier's behavior. And today could be a whole like of Article 91 if a senior has a hair trigger.

Just as the "regs" don't tell you that you cant wear a pink t-shirt, they don't need to tell you that you cant wear a flag on your backpack. AR 670-1 is clear, bags must be black and or the camo color of your duty uniform. Prior HRC slides depicted examples as well. Any logos are not authorized. Save the flag for where it belongs, on your right shoulder, do what the CSM says and stop trying to push every little thing you may see as a gray area. Nuf said.

I really, really don't like these questions, because they go into areas that involve mostly opinion and ego. The treatment of the US Flag and its replicas is covered in very much detail in this thread, so I will start with this from the FAQ section of the Institute of Heraldry (http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/FAQs/Faqs.aspx) -

"The U.S. Code states "no part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, law enforcement officials, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica should be worn on the left lapel near the heart."
The U.S. Code does not address the positioning of the flag patch. It is appropriate to wear an American flag patch on the left or right sleeve. When worn on the left sleeve, the union would appear towards the front and the stripes would run horizontally toward the back. When worn on the right sleeve, it is considered proper to reverse the design so that the union is at the observer's right to suggest that the flag is flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.
Since the law does not specifically address the positioning of the patch, a decision is left to the discretion of the organization prescribing the wear. As many states and cities have ordinances pertaining to the use of the flag, you may wish to contact the Attorney General of your state or the City Attorney's office regarding this matter."

That being said, I see no reason not to have a US Flag patch on a backpack as long as the method of display is (and now we get into the "opinion" part) appropriate, respectful and reasonable care is taken to ensure that the patch is not soiled or unsightly. As Army Regulations describe in great detail what "backpacks" are allowed in uniform (uniform in color, or camouflage matching the uniform of the wearer...etc.), I will only make this statement for the following: (now we get into the "ego part": If you see someone out in the civilian world and they are wearing a civilian backpack, AND you know them to be a Soldier in your formation, AND are in your chain of command, AND they are obviously wearing a flag patch that does not fit in the criteria described above, then, and ONLY then, should you walk up to them, identify yourself (as normally is done for on-the-spot-corrections when wearing civilian clothes) and request they correct the deficiency you noted. Usually, if done properly, the Soldier will comply, but be prepared to see them five minutes later with the patch back in place. As for the non full color versions and the UV versions, I have never seen, anywhere, at any time, any type of guidance about patches or combat insignia that resemble the US Flag (except for the required Red, White and Blue colors) except for those insignia worn on the combat uniform per AR & DA PAM 670-1. Feel free to shoot me down, but we are no longer in total control of our Soldier's actions, and the old adage of "the CSM is always right" is no longer true, as much as we would like it to be. Sometimes, even as a CSM, you have to choose your battles.

We are talking about the USA MILITARY FLAG correct gentlemen?....,well as a retired supply quartermaster sergeant myself.... we issued these flags to all of our troops for their uniforms, and other military belongings and gear!... I had them on all of my uniforms, my rucksack, even my cooks uniform chef coat... we wear them because it's proper... it's regulation.... and it's a sign of respect if nothing else, gentlemen... As a 32 year CCM (USAF, Ret), I would only state that the “flag” onsidered in these communiques is discussions the “flag” as represented in color as red, white and blue. Camo representations should be respected, however, they are representations not our “colors”. If worn in respect of the meaning, I find Nogales with the “nitpickers”; if my brother is face down, in the dirt, from injuries received, one of my later thoughts will be the position of a representation of our Nations Flag on his/her uniform/ equipment.

You aren't wearing it backwards. There is a long history about the flag being "backwards" that dates back to the revolution. The reason the flag is that way is because the stars lead into battle. If you look at history, there was a soldier that carried the flag in battle! If you hold a flag pole with a flag on it and run, the flag follows the pole. That's the reason behind the deployment play being the way it is!!!

I work as maintenance contractor at CAFB, MS. I’ve been here since 1985, going on 33 years. There was a huge flag hanging in our wash rack hangar as a backdrop for a change of command ceremony. I noticed that the flag was drawn up into a bundle. I pointed out the discrepancy and was told by management that this was done in order to keep it dry. I tried to point out that this was wrong. I then remembered that our managers, a bunch of retired E-7s throughly E-9s, know everything.

If you mean when in civilian clothing wearing of a flag patch on a backpack is not against Army Regulations, but if this flag patch is obscene then yes. If you mean while in uniform then if the flag patch did not come with the clothing item and you your self placed this flag patch on your backpack then it's against Army Regulations.

If it was against regs they wouldn't have issued them to us.. they are meant for combat ops as an ir marker. So that csm was obviously a non combat arms desk jockey not familiar with combat operations or authorized gear for said operations.

When I was in the army we did not wear any flags on our uniforms. So this is a question outside my knowledge. However if the flag is displayed in a dipped fashion,that is only suppose to be flown that way in extreme distress!

Never favored the flag patch even on the ACU shoulder, and will always believe (if worn) it should have the blue/white field of stars in the other corner. Always seemed wrongly reversed. Yes, have heard the explanation why it is as it is, but don’t agree.

I do not pretend to no any thing about regulations,because i don't,i am a God fearing,country loving patroit that beleives in the constitituion as the law of the land,and i beleive in our armed forces,God biess each and everyone of you.I come from a long line of family memebers that have served this great nation ,some even retired from their service,they have defended our flag here and abroad.and it deserves all respect and dignity,With that said i really dont understand how having a velcro patch of old glory on your to go bag is or should be against any rules or regulations! it is certainly not disrespfull or undignifying,i have one along with in God we trust,and the christian flag on mine, humbly.

From what I've read, the Union is always displayed on the left, not the right.. I've seen them worn on uniforms for many years and most of the time, the union is on the right.. Always made me wonder..

Military and Civilian norms are different, so is the time period.
When I was active and in the Reserves US Flag patches were part of the uniform, now that I am Civilian and a member of the American Legion Riders, it is almost required! THANK GOD!!!

Not knowing ARMY regs, I can't say. Personally, according to flag etiquette, I'd say it's fine to attach it to a back pack. Just my opinion, but if you disagree, that's fine.

This is all about interpretation. We wear the flag on the right shoulder. As much as I agreed with most of the responses here, I have to remind everyone that when a Soldier is down to the ground after an attack, etc... that flag will touch the ground, the floor or the water, depend on the situation. Now I will not attach my flag to a backpack nor a rucksack, but that is just me. And not, there is not such thing in any regulation. Maybe a CDR policy letter.

PFC Parker, backpack with flag or pach are against AR670-1. Chapter 3, paragraph 3-7. Required or prohibited wearing of the Army uniform. Paragraph f. Bags, handbags, purses and backpacks are authorized, but must adhere to the following criteria: (2) if Soldiers choose to wear a shoulder bag while in uniform, the bag must be black or match the camouflage pattern uniform being worn, and may not have any commercial logos. DA Pam 670-1, 25 May 2017 also give you guidance, the rule change as I recall all backpacks must be black or same as your uniform and no flag or pach was authorized. Hope this will help you Airborne

I don’t if it’s against military regs. or not, but the thought process behind wearing backward flag patch is as if was blowing in the wind. When uniformed personnel begin to march with a real flag (or guideon), the flag is affected by movement (or wind) and will face the same direction of the wind. Because of this, when a soldier moves forward, the flag would point backward. These uniform patches mimic this same idea. I don’t agree with it, but that’s the reasoning behind the backwards flag Patch.

I dislike wearing the Flag as clothing or to have it on my person unless it is uniform with those I am with. As a civilian no one should wear the Flag period. So many who complain about others, end up violating the Flag Code all the time.

You should look up the US flag code. I bet you had the same flag as worn on the right sleeve. Positioned so that blue field with the stars was to the viewers right? If so, that is against the flag code because basically unless it's on the right side of a vehicle or uniform the blue is to it's own right which is the viewers left. So many people are wearing the reversed flag patch (the name is a clue!) on hats, chests, backpacks, etc incorrectly.

During my years we didn't wear them on our uniforms as part of our accoutrements. Down South we wore them sparingly as they made good targets. so, I don't really know regulation wise.

Easy answer. The CSM doesn't want you putting the flag patch on a backpack. It doesn't matter what you feel is right. Don't put the damn flag patch on a backpack. You're a PFC. You need to be seen and not heard, both by a preference of everyone higher ranked than you and as a suggestion from me to you so you won't draw unwanted attention to yourself.

Be small. Be unheard. Don't rock the boat, private. This isn't a fight worth the attention.

I would say no. Plenty of troopers have it on helmets, it's on a variety of things. I have one on my assault pack. There are no regs specifically against it. Get over it, get busy killing Tangos.

I never thought that if a flag patch was velcroed or sewn on a backpack, that it would be considered disrespectful. If I am dead face down in the dirt, I'd like the next guy to recognize my body as American. That way he/she could collect my dog tags and mark where I fell. Wouldn't you?

I know the Army wears different flag patches representing different meanings but I think that's an absurd question to ask as a Marine... Almost to the extent of questioning it if its out of line for a cop wearing an outside vest/plate carrier that has "Police" or "US Marshall " etc velcro'd across the back of their carrier... anything that can make an operator's identity better known to their men is a good thing... Any good command who is about doing the job at hand doesn't have officers who pull rank on men imposing BS GARRISON discrepancies in the field... every Combat Operator is different and their gear and how its worn on their body specifically in the field, should be at nobody else's discretion but the individuals. I can remember personal accounts of officers making comments who weren't even from my platoon, bitching about how every one else had their ammo pouches, but backs, and IFAKs attached to their plate carriers and " who told you that you guys could wear chest rigs?" Coming from some non combat or infantry officer. (But usually non infantry because for some reason they're always so gung ho about the rules and order and uniformity... I joined to be a Scout Sniper in a Recon team and that's what I did... if I wanted to live the cookie cutter, preconceived notion of all the prior, I would have became a Drill Instructor... that life may be awesome and everything to some guys but it's not to others... I never took a gung ho supply guy, hand him a ghillie suit, take him out on a stalk and then tear them apart for being a Garbage FIELD Marine... So i never appreciated in garrison when some Motard would start bitching at me in the PX after just getting out of the field and grabbing a quick drink or smokes and had a hole in the knee of my cammies smaller than the size of a quarter... and even after apologizing hoping they would just drop it but kept egging me and egging me, pulling their rank, until they finally asked what unit I was with. As soon as they heard 2nd Recon or Scout Snipers they would just drop it, because they knew they were wasting their breath and that our officers would tell them to go "F" themselves.... I can understand guys getting bent outta shape in garrison but as far as this issue pertaining to out in the field, its absolutely a waste of energy that could be used on something more important, that's actually critical to the mission at hand... then again what do I know, Army is different. Always thought it was kind of ridiculous the Army has so many unnecessary decorations, patches and badges that just clutters the uniform, the funniest one (to me at least) was when i saw that the Army has an actual grenade throwing/qualification badge... kinda overboard to wear a badge celebrating that you can toss something... Rifle/Pistol, Scuba bubble, jump wings, EOD, and Special Operation badges is all that's necessary if rated... I dunnnnooo, personally I think it's a huge joke to even make issue of someone having a flag on their back pack or rucksack...worry about the mission...you really wanna be "that guy" busting some grunts balls for proudly wearing a 2 x 3 inch flag of the country that he's here to fight for...to die for if necessary...let's get real.

I do not believe regulations strictly prohibit however good judgement should be made. Putting the flag on a back pack could inadvertently violate regulation such as touching the ground. Just my two cents.

It’s the duty of the CSM to enforce the wearing of the uniform. The flag is probably the one thing most CSM’s will fight to defend the proper display or the wearing of it on uniform. They may error but it will be to protect the integrity of the flag.

Seems like a bunch of people are assuming your CSM called you out, though this may not be the case.

For clarification:
If your CSM called you out, stop being a dirtbag.
If not, the person has no idea what they are talking about because no it isn't. It's a patch and not offensive. Unless the backpack is part of your uniform, then any unregulated patches are against regulations.
I once had a bored LCDR go off about those of us with camel backs that were black because his wasn't and we apparently should have all matched him. Even though our black ones had been previously issued and his was bought at the Exchange. That guy was a prick though, I'm surprised he didn't make us all wear BCGs like him. Like was mentioned by others though, pick your battles.

If you are in uniform and wearing an authorized pack, technically that pack is in uniform standards and should be treated as such. So a flag patch attached to it should not be an issue. It's a gray area though, so sometimes it's best to do what's told.

We'll now, nice comments everyone. My 2 cents, while in the military unless in times of war we are not allowed to raise the flag on foreign soil, even then that means we have conquered which we only liberate today. As far as patriotic displays, I'm all for it as an individual but as a unit. I think it is not appropriate as when in the military we represent All of the U.S. just my thoughts.

So some insight young pfc. Pick your battles. As 1SG Healy and MSGT below him stated. This is a CSM. You may be right wearing it (and you are right in wearing it sorta, otherwise all that apparel with the flag printed on it would be illegal because it's the flag code, not military regulation that governs this). The fact is flag code is something we as Americans tend to ignore or is bent to different points, the strictest reading makes the flag on your shoulder a nogo.
However right or wrong as he may be in this case. He is a CSM and you are a PFC. This war would be a quick way to a reduction. Don't pick it, comply and move on. If you have a good relationship with him, ie. You're on the BN staff, you could probably get away with letting him know it's the US flag code. But without knowing him, I can't advise that action. And without knowing local policies no one here can advise you on if it is a Garrison thing, or a CSMs personal peeve.

Bottom line up front, just execute the directive, learn from it and live to become the CSM you want to be.

I think and as always up for interpretation when is says The US Flag should never be worn refers to using a real flag as a make shift shirt, undies, pants etc. I do not see where it says Images of the US Flag. The USFC is and i hate to use this cause it will cause a problem at times. Is like the Bible or any other religious book. It is open for Interpretation One NCO may see it different then a CO, so on and so on... I've been one for the simple "unless it was issued to me i really don't use it or bring it."

Flying an American flag upside down is not a distress signal and it never has been. That said, a lot of folks think that and so you should probably check on anyone displaying the flag in such a way. The uniform patch is considered a replica and as such may be worn on your uniform however since it is not stated directly whether or not it may be worn on your assault pack then it is up to your COC as to whether or not you can wear it in that manner.

Not even a little bit. There's no Army Regulation, DOD Instruction, or federal statute saying that you can't have a flag patch on a backpack. US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8 (j) does not apply unless the backpack in question is part of a costume or athletic uniform. US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8 (d) does not apply because a backpack isn't apparel.

I’m just a lowly SPC, but on my backpack I have a flag facing what people would consider the normal way, and it is coyote to match the backpack as well. So this flag could never be warn on a uniform it is simply a moral patch.

Ok folks. Are there 13 stripes with 50 actual stars on the flag patch or is it a rough resemblance and you're trying to apply a regulation to something that is as different at apples and oranges. I'll point a very couple of simple differences between The Flag and the Patch you're sniveling and quibbling about. A Flag has two sides, the flag doesn't have an embroidered yellow edge, a flag can be folded. I think we have bigger fish to fry and cry about.

The regulation only covers commercial logos on backpacks. So as long as the flag is being displayed properly it should be fine. I had the Maryland flag on my bag for a while and any time I was bothered about it I politely explained that the flag isn’t a commercial logo and I was left alone. Now, I will say sometimes it’s not a hill worth dying on and you’re better off saying, Rgr and moving on.

I have worn the American flag only once as an Arm band on the right. We were issued the bands and ordered to put them on, on deployment to Africa back in the 80's. People down there recognize the flag as to who we were and saw as friendly verses without it. Just white people in camo carrying weapons was unnerving to them for good reason. Well a couple of questions, 1 are you talking about being on active duty? 2. Or are you asking as a civilian? If on active duty AR 670-1 tells you in black and white, And being retired I have seen the flag disgraced in so many ways like with the NFL, going into restaurant's and seeing the flag touching the floor, or going by a school when they are taking it down and they just wad it up and take it inside the building. So when I see this I let them know that is wrong, and I try to explain too them why it's wrong. I have been know for going in front of city counsel and telling them how a business is disgracing our city, and our country. So to answer your question no it not wrong until they take the back pack off and throw it on the ground. But if on active duty the commander is the one who set's the standard, example would be by saying that the troops will wear the flag on the sleeve at all times, and as we all know when you are in a fire fight you hit and roll in the mud, dirt. And for the Cols and CSM. Non commissioned officers enforce what the officer put's out and it is the CSM to in form the commander when they are doing something stupide.

Is it a Military Issue ALICE PACK. If it is probably not. The Flag Patch is only authorized on the Class "C's" and no other Class of other uniform. If its on a civilian backpack then its up to the command if it is appropriate with the military uniform. Only Flag patch can only be a U.S. Flag with the U.S. Military uniform. I'm pretty sure the answer to your question can be found in AR 670-1. I know that I had a backpack issue when I was a LCpl. Was being told that I could only wear an issued Coyote Assault pack in cammies, MCO 1020.34g (now 1020.34h) stated "black, olive drab, brown, tan or a combination there of" with "manufacture tags/logos in subdued colors no larger than 5 inches long by 2 inches wide"

Now for your issue, AR 670-1 states, "the bag must be black or match the camouflage pattern uniform being worn, and may not have any commercial logos."

So I would ask, does a flag patch count as a commercial logo? I would seek further guidance from a SNCO, preferably the highest that you can comfortably talk to (IE as a Sgt I would have either spoken with my Gunny, or the Company 1stSgt, but I also had special access to the Battalion SgtMaj as the Battalion Color Sergeant).

Wholeheartedly agree! I was Coast Guard BEFORE cross decking to Navy. The ribbons/medals are the same with a few differences. 25+ years ago, some idiot started a "poser" page(over 4,000 views before it was over). One commented that they WERE allowed if I was prior Coast Guard. Too late, damage(?) done. I and my family dealt with a shit storm for several months. Other factors resulted in several Dishonorable Discharges when all was said and done. People need to know for certain BEFORE making statements. When in doubt, ask. With thanks to CDR. A bit late to the party on this one , but .....As a private I was taught to never put anything on my uniform or gear that wasn't either issued or approved by my CO ( and that could and did change from time to time as new policies were instituted ) . That stood me in good order for 21 years and after becoming an NCO I taught this to all whom I was charged with training or were under my command . Hey, this is a long thread. Read a whole bunch of it. Get real folks regulations can’t, won’t, and shouldn’t cover all situations. This comes from someone who wrote regulations for the Department of the Army as a civilian. The operative word here is good judgement and don’t let pet peeves cloud that judgement. That thought served me just fine as a senior NCO. Follow the regulation. If it isn’t in the regulation at any level, that’s when judgement comes in as well as the chain of command. Overly obnoxious NCOs and officers pushing foolish stuff are not good leaders and very bad for morale. A case in point during my time were hair cuts. If the cut was within Army regulations I let it be and didn’t push buzz cuts like mine. If it didn’t meet the reg I let them know.

In a perfect world, I'd say, "well no, it is not against regulation."
However, i reality, PFC. Parker, there are different variants of "backpacks". Ruck sack, assault pack, etc, ect. If you mount a flag on CIF issue, then you can be charged with destruction of property and subject to charges in this reguard. However against regulations, AR 670-1 isn't clear about whether or not it is regulation. However, it is called attention to detail, and attention to uniformity. Additionally, your unit may have special orders or needs for such SOP; Some units wear IR Id's on thier kits to identify themselves to friendlies. But hell, on a backpack? It is a go all day.

But this reminds of when I was a young officer and an NCO stopped me in the parking lot as I was going to class, and informed me that I was wearing my backpack with both straps. Apparently that was wrong because at the time AR 670-1 explicitly stated that backpacks were tro be worn "over the shoulder," meaning only one shoulder. I thanked him politely then went about my business.

Point is, regs like 670-1 are very often open to interpretation. If your hooah unit forbids flag patches on backpacks, take the damn thing off and find another hill to die on. When I was a Battalion Commander, my CSM and I stopped enforcing stupid shit like that because, well, it's stupid shit.

If your squad leader counsels you because of the infraction, take it like a man/woman and carry on. If you don't like it, wait six months and one of you will move on anyway -- or else, just embrace the suck and know that when you are in a leadership position, you get to decide what's important and whether or not you explain it to those in your charge.

I hope that you do choose to explain it, because that is part of not being a toxic leader.

Just to add one more thing into the mix: what is a flag? Even in the US Code it says the patch is a “replica”. So does a replica get the same respect? If so, then how can you wear it on your sleeve and crawl in mud and such?

I believe that (in simple terms) a flag is a two sided cloth (cotton or synthetic) that is designed to be displayed from a staff or pole and that flag replicas that are printed for other purposes are not flags and don’t require the same attention (though they should be treated respectfully).

The flag is a symbol of freedom and displaying the flag is an expression of that freedom. Flying it upside down is a method of protest meaning that the person sees America in dire distress. That you do not see it that way is your right. "Freedom" is a double edge sword that swings both ways. As to regs pertaining to a member of the military is another story.

Why is it the Department of Army did not give our men women assigned to The United States Army Southern Medical Command Panama during Operation Just Cause December 1989-January 1990 did not get credit for a Presidential Unit Citation? I remember a CSM ordering me to get haircut 10 days before I was to leave Japan and ETS. I ignored him as my best friend at the time was Wayne L. Hayes the most powerful man in Washington. He was a family friend. I wasn't getting a haircut. A few days go by then the CSM gives me a "direct order" to get a haircut. Again I ignore him. I am written up. In front of the CO I am asked why I disobeyed a direct order. I reply for 2 reasons, #1 Sir, your hair is longer than mine!! He asks and #2? I asked him what war we were fighting in 1976?? He says we are not at war. I reply that a NCO can only give a direct order according to the UCMJ during wartime. He agrees, tears up my Article 15 and says wait in the 1Sg office. Ends up the CSM got written up. My job was to process said Article 15 as my last official duty in Finance. Then clear my desk and not return!!

I can say that one of the biggest problems with reference to regulations is the person or persons who used to say "We can Get Around That" I locked horns many times with the Battalion Commander and his Executive Officer when the uttered those words. Some things people fail to read about regulations is normally there is a paragraph in the front that indicates what you can and can't do with reference to the regulation. Most of the time is says "No Deviations" The other thing is going all the way to the back of the regulation you will see that is is authenticated by a Four Star. I used to tell them when you outrank that man, then you can tell me to violate the basis of that regulation. Three of the biggest words in the Army have always been, Read, Think and Change. When you can adapt to those three words, you will be successful in everything that you do. I agree with the CSM but you could also probably make an MOS for a person who can interpret the regulation quickly and accurately. We used to call some of the things written in them Overkill and from reading some of the comments on TWS I can see that it is still alive and well and thriving in the Regulations.

Uniformity is the Army way. However, placing the American Flag on one's rucksack is not against regulations, unless there is an amendment. This is in garrison. In enemy territory, having an American Flag on your rucksack can make you the target of enemy fire. Best is to remain in uniform with the unit or the Army standard.

I am not aware of a regulation that prevents the U.S. Ensign patch from adorning a backpack. My only peeve is when I see Soldiers use the U.S. Ensign patch designed to be worn on their right shoulder sleeve is used on other articles of clothing or equipment. Why? Becuase the blue field with the stars on this particular patch are on the upper right corner of the Ensign -- thus it is displayed improperly when used elsewhere.

I would say you're barking up the wrong tree. I will have to admit that the military service has a regulation for everything, and having been retired for 30 years now I am in serious need of an update, I would say worry more about the guy who owns the patent on your backpack than a regulation covering the wear of the American Flag on it. depends on the flag, the backpack is an extension of your uniform, its often addressed in local policy, SOP, blue book etc, if it doesnt go on your uniform, you certainly shouldnt add your 32 pieces of flare on your backpack, save it for your civilian clothes, and your best answer will come from your local supervisors

Reading this on a blessed Sunday morning, I am not going to jack up a kid in this day in age over them wanting to project patriotism. I believe the correct answer after reading some of these awesome arguments is since we are service members it is up to us to lead by example. If you are corrected and shaky on your reg's then go find the answer and live by being the example. Those who show the desire to follow will follow your example because anyone putting out the effort these days to be patriotic wants to be lead to the right answer, activity, form and fashion. I have never met anyone who takes it upon themselves to do anything that is not receptive to considerate correction. Having been a member of a few NG units, never with a flag issue, but we did a few uniform practices that I felt/know were not correct. After reading one of the CSM's responses, your not in uniform unless you are doing what everyone else is doing in formation. All The Way

True Confession years later: Some may not find it amusing but for a long while I wore Fry Jet Boots with my USAF Class B uniform. Pull on boots were not authorized, but I had a shoemaker install six eyelets on the boots and put black laces on them, making them technically compliant. Black smooth toe, a set of six laces and a good shine. I never pushed it by trying it in a formation, or while speaking at Commanders Calls (gave security and safety briefings). It probably made me a worse NCO but I was never confronted over it. Actually it was far more military than scuffed up "combat boots" or unpolished low quarters. But not so uniform.

According to the current U.S. Flag Code, YES - that's THE regulation which it's against! The flag code prohibits wearing flags on garments! IT NEEDS TO BE REVISED to reflect current pride, allowing Americans to "wear" the U.S. Flag in the same manner as so many other world citizens wear theirs! Write to your Congressional delegation! If you are ONLY talking about the 'Flag Protocol Law', Definitely not. That is putting words into the law that are not written. I had to argue with a resident in my building (a priest) that was always yelling about people wearing flag symbols on or in clothing. If you check with the VFW expert, who is one of the nation's authorities on the subject, What the law speaks of is cutting up a flag and making clothing from it. Imprinting a flag or wearing a flag patch is not against that law or the intent of that law. Now your unit might have its own regulations which are not based on the 'Flag Protocol Law' and that would be different, but only Germane to that individual unit.

As per definition of the US code, a flag patch is not considered an official flag any more than a right shoulder patch currently worn on the right shoulder of many uniform variations. With that said, review AR 670-1 along w/ any updates to get the current standards specific to the wear and appearance of military uniforms and related items. As an important side note, it's always a good idea to go beyond the regulations to gain greater fidelity regarding the cornerstone principles (Statues/codes) that provides regulatory guidance.

My personal belief is to honor those who Honor the flag. If you decide to reprimand someone for honoring the stripes. Then you need to remember those whom fought and died for those colors. And yes even during vietnam, don't piss on the flag. We are the only country, who's solute isn't showing the Palm of our hand. So think about it, as you lead. Good question. I have a Burning Gripe about our Flag.
I do NOT like seeing it covering anyone's Butt or any other part of our anatomy as an article of clothing (that includes footwear!). I don't care to see it worn as a COVID facemask.
It is MY/OUR FLAG! It deserves respect because to me it represents every one of us who made the ultimate sacrifice; who are living with disabilities because of time serving the USA under this Flag; those of us who gave their lives as Law Enforcement; (the MAJORITY of Law Enforcement people are compassionate, caring, giving people) or First Responders - whether at Oklahoma City, 9/11 or at local disasters.
Too many of us no longer respect much of anything, especially ourselves. we behave in manners our grandparents would hang their heads in shame.
Make political statements if you will, that is your second amendment right. But leave Old Glory out of it. She is hallowed & entitled to our respect. Direct your political statements to the People who need to have their chains jerked, Not the Emblem that should represent all that is good, honorable, and altruistic.

The flag code (4 USC) keeps popping up here. Which isn't a bad thing, it's good advice. But it's also not a "legitimate" law in that it's entirely unenforceable at any level under any circumstances.

As one of us quoted it out above, we can all refer back to it and then juxtapose it with this truth: If the Flag Code was actually enforced then literally thousands of Service-members would be subject to Court Martial. EVERY GI who ever carried a flag in a parade or sporting event or other public event, where that flag was carried in HORIZONTALLY, would be subject to Court Martial for violation of Federal Law.

4 U.S. Code § 8(c): The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free."

So what Officer or Staff NCO wants to start writing up the Article 32 paperwork for literally GENERATIONS of GIs and make himself a pariah and an embarrassment to the Service?

Just rotate your flag patch 90 degrees counterclockwise so its vertical and not horizontal and you're all set. The Sergeant Major will be happy, and you'll be happy.

The union (the blue part with stars) is supposed to be in the flag's own top right (so when you look at it, it appears to the viewer in the top left). The exception is when the flag is worn on the right sleeve, because it's supposed to look like you're moving forward through the wind, presumably into combat. Atleast metaphorically you're moving forward making progress on some mission. The other exception is when the flag is on a coffin, because it's facing the deceased.

Presumably the flag patch the PFC is asking about is the one meant for his/her right uniform sleeve. When you put it on the back of your pack, you are presumably not sidestepping laterally to your right the whole time. You're also presumably not deceased. I doubt you bought a flag patch that was not meant for your uniform sleeve with the union on the opposite side (you often see these on security guard uniforms worn on the left sleeve - you could always get one if you want).

So just rotate your issue flag patch vertically when you put it on your pack and move out...

In the Quarterly Publication “Proceedings” published by the Naval Institute there is usually a 2-4 paragraph side bar called “Nobody asked me but...” where someone interjected their opinion about some Naval (or military) “hot button” issue. It was kind of a kid gloves off answer.

In my family tact and diplomacy were never family traits along those lines before my mother passed away she said that she had done too good a job of teaching me about sarcasm. After more then a few years in the Coast Guard I became first a Chief Petty Officer and 1-1/2 years later I was commissioned as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. As a CWO I was often asked my opinion on an issue where at times my answer to the CO was a flat No sir we can’t do that. There was a collective gasp by the young O-1s fresh from the Academy to the cutter; that someone would dare say No to the CO. Of course the next words out of my mouth would be a viable way to do with hat the CO a was asking to be done.

This discussion about putting a US Flag Patch on a back pack should be a question in the General Knowledge version of Trivial Pursuit; does it really matter as long as it is done respectfully? Are there more important topics that should be discussed by All Hands?

This May be a little off topic. I have an issue with clothing that is made to appear that it is the flag. (hats, shirts, jackets, etc.) Its disrespectful to me to wear it as clothing. I am interested how many others feel that way.

I believe that a flag patch can be worn on a backpack as long as it is properly displayed in both a horizontal or vertical position.
The flag on one of my backpacks has a flag properly displayed, and I am proud of it. For me, it shows my pride in my country in uniform or in my civilian clothes.

This one came up recently because someone made a wreath for their house using a flag they received at her father's funeral. What you want is the US code. It does say about the flag authorization for soldiers uniforms. My main bitch about disrespect to the flag is those that have a tattered us flag hanging on the bed of their truck occasionally flanked by the Confederate battle flag or the black and blue flags. These are the same people that will call themselves patriotic but show more disrespect to the flag than someone kneeling in protest.

Does everyone in your unit have a flag on their ruck? If the answer in no then you have your answer to what you should do. If it was in regs everyone would have one and there would be no questions. Just simple without delving into rule books. Don’t bump heads with Sgt Majors, it rarely ends well unless your O5 O6.
