It's been reported that US service members were guarding doors to some classrooms at OSU. Do you feel like that was expected as soldiers?

If the article is accurate some soldiers were Hero's today. As we would expect. How would you act in that position. I would suppose we would all have wanted to do the same. But would you do it?

Mission of the Marine Corps Rifle Squad is to locate, close with, and destroy the enemy, by fire and maneuver, or repel the enemy assault by fire and close combat.

I am personally not fond of the Shelter in Place drills that are typical protocol for active shooters. The first order of business would be identify anyone with military/law enforcement/martial arts training for volunteers. Assuming no one is armed because of "gun free zones", search the immediate area for anything that can be improvised as a weapon. Next secure the classrooms with some form of barricade (locked doors, desks propped up against the door etc). Also try to leave at least one person with training per room as a last defender. After that, it's take whomever is willing to try and neutralize the enemy while remaining behind cover as much as possible.

This is what we were trained to do and if the time ever came I would hope I would act in such a manner. Some might call it heroic, but personally I feel it's the right thing to do.

No need for Soldiers to guard anything. Five SWAP Teams were on station within minutes, quicker than any Soldiers could be recalled................

With the militarization of State Federal and Local LEO's the Poorly educated Children in the Collages and Universities would not know the difference between a LEO and a Military service member ... or a National Guardsman so I don't put much stock in the early and initial reports...

Guarding the doors is to be expected, given that they were disarmed by asinine policies and thus had little to no chance of effectively taking the fight to the enemy.

I think that while it might not be expected, it was a survival situation. I would have been preparing to defend my position and by virtue of their presence, anyone else in there. As a Run, Hide, Fight instructor, I encourage program participants to think outside the box in securing a defendable location and improvising objects at hand into makeshift weapons. Luckily, the decisive action of the young law enforcement professional ended the mayhem with limited casualties
