Jane Fonda special appearance draws Veteran protestors. What do her apologies mean to you?

77-year-old Jane Fonda was at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick for a speaking engagement Friday.

Fonda told the audience she made a "huge mistake'' that led many to think she was against soldiers fighting in Vietnam, and it's something that she'll take to her grave. She says she understands their anger and that it makes her sad.

Fonda drew the ire of many Americans when she visited North Vietnam at the height of the Vietnam War, leading some to call her "Hanoi Jane.''

Some actions deserved to be taken to the grave. Her treachery is one of those unforgivable acts. God forgives, but Americans have an excellent memory. "Hanoi Jane" is going on her tombstone.

CPT Aaron Kletzing, over the years, she's tried to apologize to some degree, and many of the acts that she's purported to have committed have been shown to be overblown. However, she was wrong overall, and her behavior will never be accepted in the military community, in my opinion. Her apologies to me are hollow and meaningless.

There should have been a treason charge, there was not. Too late. I believe she is an old lady full of regret and truly sorry. Forgiveness doesn't free the person who wronged you from what they did, it frees you from the poison of hate.

I vote to forgive, but not forget what she said and did in Vietnam. For the most part, I agree with those who say she's probably just saying what she thinks people want to hear. On the other hand, she's getting older and she may actually be sorry for what she did. Even if that's the case, that doesn't excuse it, it just makes her sorry for what she did.

As the son of a Soldier who served two tours in Vietnam as a Cobra Helicopter Pilot (and who served 27+ years overall), Jane Fonda's actions have always bothered me.
I just wonder how many Americans either lost their life or were otherwise negatively affected by her actions?

This apology is completely self-serving. She thinks this distracts from her latest cause, so she's willing to mumble some seemingly humble words, but then takes it all back in the next sentence.

In her world, veterans just don't understand that she was never against them and it's our fault that we get it wrong.

What she says is meaningless to me. I believe she is only apologizing because of the way Americans now feel towards the military. Even though I think a lot of that is bogus by many. I learned at a young age to forgive and forget, but in this case I will make an exception. Yes, I can forgive, even though I really do not have the right to forgive her because her offense was against the past generation.

She succeeded in using her celebrity status to get her message out to the world all those years ago. If she is sincere, then she should make a more concerted effort to use her celebrity status and wealth to make amends with the Vietnam War generation, and to teach the current and next generations a better way to be against war, but not against the military.

This is a very transparent attempt by a woman with few years left in her life to attempt a rehabilitation of her legacy before she passes on.
I do not believe she is sincere; she spent decades defending her actions, often with very carefully crafted statements.
I do think she was attempting to be "cool" to the anti-war movement (a lot of great Americans did not support the Vietnam War) and took it several bridges too far. The NV I am quite sure relished the opportunity for photo ops and propaganda, staging and egging on her antics. And her dumb, young a$$ fell for it.
I don't have to forgive her, any more than those Westboro Baptist Church scumbags who disrupted two funerals for Soldiers I knew, and countless others.

By the way, the local VFW has "Hanoi Jane" urinal liners. I think that says it all.

I think that she is an opportunist for publicity.

Jane can be as sad as she wants to be but it will never change what she did. She should of been charged with treason. Yes, she admits she made a "huge mistake" but that does not justify her actions. Young, naive, in love and fighting for a cause that, by 1972, most of the Nation supported--end the war in Vietnam. She claims the POW note passing never happened and that she was manipulated into the infamous photo op placing her in the gunner's seat of the North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. Perception is one thing and reality, quite often, another. Truth is, she should never have been there in the first place and her actions furthered the cause of our enemies both at home and abroad. She claims she's sorry and she should be but when it comes to real blame, her actions pale in comparison. From the Gulf of Tonkin to our abandonment of our South Vietnamese allies in the Spring of '75, our Government essentially fought the VN war as a "holding engagement" against Communism at the expense of nearly 60K American and God only knows how many Vietnamese lives--somewhere between one to two million. McNamara said later, "We knew going in that we couldn't win"--WTF. For those who hate Jane Fonda, I get it and I have no problem with it but she is just the Poster Child. There is no Forgiveness and no forgetting of Hanoi Jane's crimes. My father and stepfather served in Nam. She is a Traitor to America, she provided aid and comfort to the enemy, and through her direct actions caused pain and misery to POW's. She could cure cancer and end global hunger and I would STILL despise her and call her Hanoi Jane.

I learned a long time ago to not accept apologies, they are given by people that think words are more powerful than action. A person will apologize and in time they will justify their actions because they apologized. Once they do that they will convince themselves they have the right to wrong you again. If you never forgive them never forget their actions you will never be taken advantage of by them again. She is in my top ten list of people that should have been tried for treason and met a long drop with a short stop.

I didn't join the military until 1978, Viet Nam was done. But I distinctly remember coming home on leave and some of my friends and acquaintances had a demonstrably bad attitude toward my service and treated me pretty poorly. At reunions now they are all a "big" supporters of the military and "always have been." They pretend they didn't do some of the disgusting things (bodily fluids, excrement, vandalism) to me and to my father's home to show their disapproval. I chose not to come home again for eight years. I will forgive if asked, (never has happened yet); but I will never forget.

I am a post Vietnam era Navy veteran. I view her actions during the Vietnam War as collaborating with the enemy. Every time I am reminded of her and those like her I see it as treason. That being said, I grew up watching the Vietnam War and its protest on the evening news. Politics ran the war and its effects definitely affected the morale of our servicemen. I served with active duty personnel who served in Vietnam and I have the highest respect for their duty in Vietnam and high disdain for their treatment by the citizenry of our country. I would look on Jane Fonda more favorably if she actively involved herself in support of our veterans, but I don't see any.. I believe the power of forgiveness so therefore I forgive her, however I can not condone her actions and will not forget it.
