They were pretty much breed to fight. One moment that stands out the most in this movie was when the Athenians asked bout the Spartans. Themistocles told them that Xerxes give Leonidas an offer he couldn't refuse. That offer was a beautiful death. The spartans looked forward to combat in a way that glorified it. This is not the case today. I can't say I have seen soldiers in the army like this outside the Ranger and SF community.
