The best scouts are the ones who actually learn what a Scout can do, and not just spit out a couple buzz words they heard like "snooping and poopin" "recon" "when in doubt, shoot the Scout". Learn you demo formulas, learn screen lines, area-zone-route recons, be able to draw a sector sketch with proper military symbols, know your blue, green, and yellow reports. Know the max range and effective ranges of the weapon systems (there's a lot of em!). It's a huge manual (level 1 is thicker than 11B 1, 2, 3, and 4 combined! suck it cmf 11!). We need scouts who know scouting, not pretending to be infantry or tankers. Fundamentals of reconnaissance is another one to read up on too. I would suggest doing your SSD 1 at arrival at your unit when you can as it will show your leaders you want to excel. Tradition is huge in the Cav and you will love it. Enjoy the spur ride! Scouts Out! You will probably actually love that you did, just not while you're wondering why you did. It is a limited population and most regular folks will think you're actually crazy. Most Scouts I knew were highly competitive and will always aim for the highest scores. If you meet the standards, you will be miles behind of promotions. You want a max score on PT, SQT, ARTEP, and a new thing called Gunnery. A low score on any of these topics will put you on a "catch up" coarse. If you can't run 10 miles without resting, you better start beating feet. I've covered over 30 miles in a single night, although only carrying assault gear, so myself and 50 pounds of weapons/ammo/gear. Lastly, you have got to be comfortable in the dark, because most Scouts only move after dinner chow. Never give up, Rock Steady. I am currently at 1/25th SBCT 5-1 CAV Ft Wainwright, but you can go to a Bradley unit as well or light. Stay motivated!
