The only reason there have never been greater expectations is because at this moment in time our military is the most modern it has ever been. Tomorrow it will be even more modern. I have 2 sons and would love to see them serve. It's easy as we get older to look back and see what all has changed for good and bad. But for our kids, this wasn't change at all. It's just their normal. My step-daughter was born in 2003 and from time to time it becomes blatantly obvious that she never knew what pre-September 11th America was like. Insurgents, terror attacks, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; hearing about those things are as American to her as apple pie. My son is 15, and I just retired from the military. There are amazing opportunities with the GI Bill, and other assistance packets out there. Also there are jobs in the military that can get you a really good career once you get out. So these things matter.

At the same time the military has become in jeopardy of cuts, not just to the soldier, but to benefits due to political wrangling. The there is the possibility of continued combat roles over an extremely long period of time. I want the best life for my kid, and that doesn't include PTSD, depression and some of the other common things I see post combat with soldiers.

I will support whatever choice he makes, but I focus on getting him into a good school, and on track with a good career on the outside. I'd push schooling or certification courses if possible. If the desire was strong to enlist, they'd have a choice of Army or crayoneaters. Have to maintain some respect.
I'd break the life down to them knowing they won't understand until it hits them directly, tell them what they need to be ready to do to be better than the next, and let em rip. Gives you a sense of pride that nothing can match. Gives you time away from others that would influence you in a direction that they want not what you want in your life. Learning is vital to succeed in life be proud of what you have learned and share that knowledge with others.
Often I am asked if I miss the military. I respond every day. In the age of Call of Duty and Modern Warfare and the like, combat and the military is romanticized as being all action and fun. I also explain to them why war is bad and not sexy like the movies and video games. Part of me says yes join up. You will be in the company and presence of America’s finest. You’ll learn everything you need to learn about being a productive member of American society. Joining the Military is not about the benefits... it is about serving your country... if you join the military for the benefits please defer...It's ok it is called the service for a reason...it is not about what you can get out of income or potential benefits but what you can do to serve your country. If nothing else it is a great way to get a young person's mind straight about responsibility, teamwork and loyalty. Of course there are tremendous other benefits to serving, especially if one makes a career out of it. The politically correct hogwash is reducing our lethality and will result in deaths. I don’t want my progeny to die validating a social experiment. If the military returns to strict high standards based on MOS without any gender “norming” “ adjusted scales etc”. The military should reflect the nation it serves but the point is to project lethal offensive and defensive force not hold fire side pep rallies and unity clambakes. It’s very simple. Establish tough high standards for combat arms and each MOS and let the chips fall as they may. Zero tolerance for discrimination. If top delta candidate is female move everyone else aside, etc. true equality and fairness.
The same goes for fire departments, police, medical school etc. May the best candidate win. Participation in the military is something I believe in strongly. I encouraged my sons and grandson to spend at least one enlistment period in the military, of course, they did not follow that course, much to my chagrin. There are several reasons for feeling that way. 1) As a citizen of America we owe it to our nation as a whole to become vested as a member of society (this vestiture can be earned in ways other than military service, ie Peace Corps, etc.); 2) The experience of growing up is significantly accelerated thanks to military service; 3) Conviction of one's beliefs may become more concretely cemented as a result of service; 4) Love for one's country and a feeling of having contributed to the value of our way of life as a whole.
I am sure there are more reasons but these are, perhaps, the uppermost in my mind (an old mind, but a mind nonetheless.) Since graduating he has not been able to find an entry level position most likely because of his lack of experience, no work history and he was unable do an internship. He has now been out of school for a year and I encouraged him to check into the opportunities offered by the Mational Guard. I served on active duty from 79-82 and have been in the ARNG since 2005. I have been full time since 2008 and absolutely love serving in the NG. I would encourage him to go active duty but he was very enthusiastic about the NG after speaking with a recruiter. I told him whatever his decision was I would support him but also told him to seriously consider his future goals and the best way to achieve them. He is extremely intelligent and scored a 99 on his ASVAB as well as getting a 139 GT. I was very proud of him even though he beat my GT by 6 pts. They really wanted him to go OCS direct from BCT. As proud as I would have been to have him become an officer I encouraged him to do what best met his needs and goals. He was unable to get the one MOS I was really hoping he could get because of a single ticket he got while in college. Unfortunately a Petty Misdemeanor disqualified him from getting a TS clearance as a 35T. He surprised me by accepting a 91D Power Generation Specialist as it most closely tied into his EE degree. His greatest priority was tuition repayment and this met his plan to pay of his entire $30k plus student debt. He’ll also be able to save all his pay and should be able to come home with $10k in the bank and some new skills to hopefully help him get an entry level EE job with a major power company. I can’t help but think what a great experience this will be for him and give him the confidence, additional skills he needs and something extra to put on his resume to get a great start on life. He will also be able to go back to school to work on his Masters while serving. I’m hoping he likes this enough and can find a warrant position that would fit his needs but even if he just serves his term and gets out I think it will help him in ways he can’t imagine. His mother and father both served AD in the Air Force so I’m even more happy the Army was able to provide him with the best opportunities. Only time will tell but I hav no doubt this will be a positive experience for him. I would encourage my children to serve a single hitch in the military... to do what should be an obligatory duty across the board for all youth... and after that don't walk but RUN the other direction towards employers who cherish hard working employees and reward them for their hard work... and I especially would NOT encourage them to go into the Reserve or Guard for exactly the same reason... especially since employers are weary of Reservists and Guardsmen (and women) who are performing active duty tours at an unreasonable rate (from the employer's perspective). And then there is the intense wear and tear on military families and the growing rates of divorce. Thus one single tour of duty and then out would be my loving advice. She has been working out to tone her body, getting ready for Basic and then for real soldiering. She actually tried to get into Basic during her summer break, but her birthdate prevented that option for her. Which means that she has another year to get into even better shape. She participates in 'Mud Runs' for fun! She also goes hunting regularly, and her Mom and Step-Dad insisted that she learn to field dress her kills; she says it's 'icky', but she does it. The youngest of the three will be entering 9th grade next year. He too thinks he wants to enlist; but I might twist him up a bit. He is already taking college-level courses at his school. And, I MAKE him THINK. I push him to THINK. And think to hard. I push him to read and then I ask questions about what he read. When he was 14 he joined the sea cadets, our sea cadet unit was run by veterans of all branches and was able to ask and get answers about the various branches. Also because of the advantages from that experience , he ended up joining the navy and was an MM2 (E-5) in 3 years. I never pushed him to join and didn't discourage him from joining. Mixed in with the U-238 were other radioactive hot particles like plutonium, U-235, etc.

This is a must watch video and the every US General who authorized the use of DU is guilty of a war crime. The only reason to use DU is against the most advance Russian tanks and then the US has a duty to clean up the mess. U-238 is denser than steel (harder) so it purpose was to punch a hole thru Russian tanks and/or explode.

I have been protesting about this subject since 1991. I had one of my friends, (also a subordinate) die of cancer after serving in the second Iraq War.

Recall the Gulf War Syndrome? This Gulf war had a total of 760 causalities, 294 dead and 463 injured and ill in this war. 159,238 and over 8,000 dead. Over 250,000 people who served in the Gulf war got sick. Over 700, 000 metric tons of DU stored.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/e-VkpR-wka8

DU is being added concrete in infrastructure and making construction workers. McNamara favored sanctions against Hussein, as did retired Admiral Crowe. The conservative arms advisor to former President Reagan, Paul Nitze, also preferred sanctions, saying that he thought that we could outlast Hussein.

On November 2, 1990, the Security Council authorized "all necessary means," including military force, against Iraq if it did not withdraw from Kuwait by 15 January 1991. It was the first such resolution since UN sponsorship of the Korean War in 1950.

Hussein announced on December 6, 1990 that he was releasing all foreign hostages – including Americans. Democrats plunged into acrimonious opposition to Bush's policy regarding Iraq. On 12 January 1991, the US Congress authorized Bush's offensive against Iraq. The vote in the Senate was 52-47. The House of Representatives voted 250-183. Not an overwhelming majority for turning Iraq into a toxic wasteland. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Javier Perez de Cuellar, was moving to and from Baghdad and other capitals, hoping that pressure would force Hussein to back down. Gorbachev tried to broker a peaceful settlement. Then Pope Jean Paul weighed in. On 16 January, one day after the deadline for Hussein had passed, the Holy Father telephoned Bush and asked that Bush postpone his offensive. GHW Bush refused.

In mid-February, Saddam Hussein was expecting the Allied offensive to begin soon, and he announced that he was ready to withdraw from Kuwait if Israel returned the territories it had been occupying since the 1960s. Gorbachev attempted a peace proposal to end the war before the Allies launched their assault. Iraq was in agreement with the proposal, which was for an unconditional Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait; the Soviet Union committed to maintaining Iraq's state structure and borders; the end of all sanctions against Iraq; and no punitive actions against Saddam Hussein.

Bush's Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney, had a problem with Schwarzkopf's continuing requests for delays.
USS George H W Bush.?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98MBz8bG_M4
For a great deal of detail, see:

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article9322.htm
In the 1991 Gulf War, the U.S. used 340 tons of depleted Uranium on parts of Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, firing thousands of DU bullets, tank shells, and artillery shells, and dropping thousands of bombs.
The U.S. got rid of another 10-20 tons or so in the Balkans during 1994-99. When UN investigators inspected depleted Uranium targets in the Balkans, they found that American DU was contaminated with other radioactive elements. DU was used in unmeasured amounts on target ranges in Hawaii, Okinawa, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and elsewhere.
According to a statement by NATO Secretary-General Lord Robertson, some 31,000 rounds of DU ammunition were used throughout Kosovo during the 11 weeks.
A minimum of 500 – 600 tons now litter Afghanistan,
Mainstream media have not covered depleted Uranium to any significant extent,
Undersecretary of the Army Bernard Rostker, head of DoD's Office of Gulf War Illnesses. I would encourage my future children to join if they do or do not have an idea what they want to do later in life. They may discover what their true passion is and also the things they absolutely do not want to do with their life. Either way; the lessons are invaluable. I should also mention that it is family tradition to serve, having relatives that were in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I & II, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, OEF, and OEF.

I leveraged what I did in the ANG/AF to get my feet wet into what I do now (human resources) and I do not regret it. They also paid for half of my master's degree and my professional certification so the educational opportunities are worth it.

The lessons learned from my military service were a continuation of my work-hard upbringing. Give it 100%, 100% of the time; it is easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission; and to never let your guard down. Do what you need to do to make stuff happen. Push yourself until you can't go any further, then go another half mile. Do not make excuses, own up to mistakes and learn from them. All pretty simple stuff; I fit in like a square peg in a square hole.

I would gladly tell them all that I have experienced, the good, the bad and the ugly. At 20 a little more mature, if he wants to go in then, he has that behind him, but he also knows that if he wants to serve that those last two years can be on an ROTC program and go in as an Officer. Recruiters of course presented College paid for after serving. What I told him about that is that once you have served, you possibly get out with more responsibility or you enjoy that incoming paycheck, that going to school then would still be possible, just more difficult. But then, the one I retired from was different than the one I enlisted in 20 years before that. Times change. Expectations and jobs change, evolve. This is to be expected.
I retired in 1998. When 9/11 occurred, three years later, I expected folks to behave the way I would have if I was still on active duty; but I was sadly disappointed. I interacted daily with folks in the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy. Within weeks of that event, the active duty folks on the four local military bases I frequented daily were whining and complaining how their duty schedule interfered with the important things in their lives.
I didn't understand this then, nor do I today.
I used to try to hire young adults into my business; I ran a small business doing computer maintenance and some basic programming. They would come to me with a piece of paper, having passed a test, informing all and sundry, that they knew how to make a computer work. I showed them where the parts were, and asked them to assemble a computer, verify the BIOS was set correctly, and install the operating system. NONE of them could do this in less than two days. And they wanted me to double-check every step, every process along the way. They lacked the confidence to be able to do it on their own. They were never taught how to succeed, nor that one had to be willing to try and fail. And, to maybe, ultimately succeed.
Sorry, I went off on a rant in a totally different direction.
The young people joining up today... I don't know anything about them.
I watch the ones in my grandchildren's schools, and I worry. Many of them either can't read or won't read, I can't tell. Most of them don't seem to be able to put down their phones and/or tablets. They believe that because they want to do something they have the right to do that thing.
We did stupid stuff, back when I was in school, acted out in inappropriate ways; were bullied and bullied in return. We gave each other bloody lips and/or noses. stuffed each other in lockers. But these kids are different.
They haven't been taught to respect themselves let alone anyone else. They don't understand Patriotism, Honor, Duty, Integrity, or any of the other fine personality traits we hope our military members have ingrained in them.
I watch young adults insisting that their feelings about an issue make that issue relevant to everyone; and that we must respect them for those feelings. I watch young adults proclaim that the things that are established scientific and proven medical facts be denied and declared false because those facts go against what they feel about those things.

I have hope, rather than expectations, for our future military.

I'm stopping here. Maybe somebody can cheer me up. Today is a day of pain for me and maybe that's why I am actually saying this to another person, instead of keeping it to myself.

Have yourselves a great day! I am proud of what we did when I was in, despite the riffing of combat experienced officers and NCO's. What I am disgusted by is the horrendous treatment by the VBA with their aberrant rating system. The government continuously fails our families when our exposures to NBC toxins and contamination are repeatedly denied, including undisclosed testing, and when our families have medical issues the VBA again does the deny, deny, deny thing. So while I am proud of what I did - I, and my family, have paid a terrible price. I do not wish that on my children. I have a lot of issues because of Agent Orange - the VHA does their best, but the VBA is absolutely unforgiving and horrendous. As Country Joe sang - they killed me during Vietnam, but they forgot to tell me. In SW Asia medical records were deliberately lost to deprive our men and women the ability to file claims - a longtime trick committed by the collusion of the VBA and the DOD. I am past that point. My father told me if I wanted to serve, join the Coast Guard. Being a stupid young man, I joined the Army. One day he told me he wanted to join the military, I told him if you want to join the military, join the Coast Guard or Air Force, don't join the Army. Of course being a strong willed young man, he joined the Army. I supported him 100%, spent a lot of restless nights when he had to do a tour in Iraq. I got him back, he did survived 5 IED hits. His MOS, Fister. What did he actually do, patrol between FOB/COB Kalsu and Baghdad 6 nights a week. I am proud of him, proud he served. Just not the kind of thing as a parent you want to go through. Social Media is great, and you could just watch him on Facebook talk with his friends each day and know he was OK.
