Have you ever received "that" late night phone call? What happened?

Of course, I am sure most people would appreciate some anonymity but it is always interesting to hear about some of the wild things Soldiers call you about at 0-Dark-30.

Had a few in my day. Most involved DWIs or similar issues. Got one concerning the death of one of my troops in a car wreck ... you don't want to get that call.

Way more times than I'd ever like to have.

Funniest one was a newly minted E-5 that got in a fight in a bar...
with some dude's girlfriend.

She lost a tooth; he got smoked by a beer bottle.
Girl wins.

Him - a weekend in the cooler. Since he was a corrections officer, and the "what are you in for" question definitely had the wrong answer, he was looking pretty rough on Monday when he came to see me and explain himself.

I was on "courtesy patrol". I drove a van to pick up soldiers from bars. I drove to a strip club to find a bloodied young kid sitting on a curb with 2 bouncers standing over him. I got out began berating the bouncers. These 2 huge black guys looked bewildered and explained innocently that it wasn't them(which was surreal) Come to find out he was heckling a Vietnamese stripper. Called her racial slurs and this tiny woman used her high heels to beat the heck out of this drunk kid from the stage.

10 of your marines get picked up by PSPD....you get to call the OD and say

"Sir...Palm Springs Police just called...they have ten of our guys in lock up."

"from the battalion?"

"no sir, from alpha company"

"Ill be right there"

Monday morning report to 1st sgt was fun and exciting...lol...

I got the call when one of my guy had shown up at the gate drunk and pissed on a German Ponds guard because he didn't have his ID on him and he got mad. MPs got called, I had to pick him up from from the PMO, I took him back to the barracks. I tucked him in thinking "ok, that was a fun night..."

WRONG!!!! So, so wrong!

I get home, and I get a call from the CQ desk "Silva, PVT --- is being stupid." "What do you mean..." "He banging his head against the hallway wall and smashing all his glass wear in the hall, and he's cut all to hell" I return to the barrack. He is only getting more violent. I call the jail, to get ahold of guard commander. He recommends bringing him into the holding cell (where they would inprocess inmates) that way we had multiple eyes on this guy and I would have help if he remained violent, and we had cuffs. Once at the jail he thinks it's a good idea to try and fight the body building size guard commander and 3 other guards. Wrong. He ends up on the ground rather quickly. We keep him there until he sobered up and took him back to the barracks where he spent the rest of the weekend cleaning; the barracks, the ponds guard shacks, the PMO and the jail. Which means I got to babysit cleaning all weekend.

Fast forward to the Monday: soldier asked to go to sick hall because he says the guard commander and I were physically abusing him (thank god for the confinement facility having video tapes)- and he has headaches from us. So a few hours later I get a call from his doctor saying my PVT needs to be quarantined for a few days because he has an extreme case of head lice. The headaches were caused from him HEARING the eggs hatching.

So now I get to spend the rest of my Monday with the rest of the prison staff doing head searches on 110 inmates and 125 service members! And I got to call all people who had contact with him over the weekend- to include the PMO and the Ponds guards.

Pulling weekend SDO at the division level all bets are off and anything goes. You get the phone call from the desk MP at the "drunk tank" then you get to call some poor 1SG out of a sound sleep at 0200 to tell him PVT Schmedlap is an idiot. Used to love to watch Tops chew out the poor SOBs.

It wasn't a call, it was a text. One of my Soldiers, a newly promoted SGT, texted me at around 0030 hrs to let me know he did not have an ACH, as per the packing list I had sent out about a month prior, for our upcoming Annual Training event. Did I mention that he texted me at 0030 hrs of the morning he was flying out?

I have had the misfortune of responding to a death, as well as numerous calls from SM's in jail. However, my two most memorable were from applicants in my DEP pool, even before they shipped out for basic training!
The first was from a very charismatic young man who was underage. He was hosting a keg party in the back field of his families property in BFE. I was called and he begged me to come to the hospital 50 miles away from my house. I arrive and see numerous juveniles, as well as a uniformed policeman. Brad (my young applicant) came up to me and shook my hand and said (a little too loudly) "Thanks for stopping by to check on us Sgt Skipper", all the while slipping me a fake ID. Turns out, he had used it to buy the beer. The hospital trip was because they had been doing doughnuts in the field in a 4x4 truck and the truck rolled. The teenagers in the back were thrown, but one was rolled over. Enter Cops and Ambulance, shenanigans ensue .....
The second was from a young lady (Annie J.). She was 2 weeks away from shipping out and driving home from work. A vagrant decided he was going to commit suicide that day, and did it by stepping out into oncoming traffic. Annie was the poor girl who ended up being the "bullet in his gun". Trauma and pending investigations ensue, but at the end of the day, Annie shipped on time. Turns out, John Doe had left a note in his flop house stating his intentions, so the detectives let her ship out on schedule.

I was TAD to my ship's Master At Arms force and was sitting Dispatcher watch one night. I got a call from San Jose PD (ship was in San Diego) saying that they had arrested a suspect for car jacking. When they ran his SSN he turned out to be a deserter from my ship. SJPD wanted to know what to do with him. I got their phone number and told them I'd call back after I notified my chain. Long story short, I told SJPD that we would let them keep him until they were finished with him, meaning he went to trial and stood his sentence.

Fast forward 3 or 4 months. Again I'm on Dispatch watch and get a call from the Navy's Brig Chasers. These were the people who collected deserters after they were released from jail, prison, etc. saying that they were bringing car jacking boy in. They got him to the ship, I signed all their paperwork to turn him over to us and even had to place him in handcuffs.
After we talked it over with the ship's JAG officer and the rest of our chain, it was decided that we didn't want to keep him on the ship until he went to Court Martial for desertion. So we placed him in a "RILA" (Restricted In Lieu of Arrest) status and transferred him to MCAS Miramar brig and there he stayed until his Court Martial.

I got a call at 2am and the Platoon Sergeant told me I needed to go get my troop from Belgium (I was stationed in Germany at the time). I asked him why, and he told me that she was smuggling drugs across the border. I told him to leave them there and hung up. The LT ended up going to get them.

I was NCOIC of the Missile Shop at England AFB, LA and got a call from my senior E-5 at 2300 on Sunday night, that he needed a ride home. He was across the Mississippi River on his way back to base and had hit a feral hog on his motor cycle. I called his wife and picked her up and set out for Mississippi. We arrived at the ER and he looked terrible! He had been wearing the appropriate safety gear, thankfully, but he had yards of road rash, complete with imbeded gravel. It was hot weather, so no leathers. His bike was the worse for wear and he had to return later that week to retrieve it. I turned around and took him straight to the Base Hospital ER. He was debriding gravel from his road rash for a couple of weeks. He said there was hog hide all over the road and the hog ran off into the woods.

Ft. Sill, OK... 13F AIT instruction battery. I'm a young SPC splitting time between the command/1SG and helping teach the BFIST course. My wife and son still live in Louisiana, so I'm a geographical bachelor. Which means, I get asked to help a lot. I get a call about 2130 Friday night from the commander asking me to come drive the 15 passenger van to go pick up 5 of our soldiers who were arrested for beating the holy crap out of a young man at the mall. Cool, I'm on my way, Sir. We roll out headed to the provost marshals office, and he gets another call from his wife. His stepson is being released from the hospital, cuz he got his ass kicked. By 5 guys. At the mall... they were picking on someone else, and he tried to just tell them to back off. So now we have all 6 in the van together. He was keeping his cool, until... we get another call from Lawton PD. His stepdaughter is being detained at one of the strip clubs, cuz she was trying to dance on stage (at 17...) and two guys started groping her. Who also turned out to be from our battery... It was a looooooooong weekend for everyone involved, except me. I drove everyone back to post and the CDR gave me Monday and Tuesday off so I wouldn't have to be around the BS circus that was coming.

I have many, many stories from that battery.

Actually, XXXX fell INTO the parking lot. From the 3rd floor ledge of the barracks. He landed in the windshield of a POV. Drunk.

The late night calls have changed over the years. When I was an LT it was from an MP or local Police drunk, fights etc...

Unfortunately that progressed to the dreaded call of KIAs/WIAs
That phone call feels like a kick in the gut. Sleep got pretty rare during those days.

Caused only one late phone call to TOP.
Fayetteville NC 1972 Hays street, my best Army buddy (Jun) and I got into a fight at a strip club, because Jun didn't like the way three guys were treating a woman Salvation Army soldier asking donations for the Salvation Army.
Jun stood up and told the three guys that they were ANIMALS treating the woman like they were doing. The three called Jun and I out, and we went to fighting, Jun threw the tall guy threw a shop window, and I knocked out the biggest guy as the three black prostitutes on the street cheered me on. The third guy ran, and here came the police and arrested Jun and I for fighting.

I made that late phone call to TOP, and told him that Jun and I were in jail for fighting three guys. TOP only asked one question, "DID YOU WIN", I said, "YES", and he said, "Good, the CQ will be picking you up, and you and Jun's ass are mine for the next two weeks".
Ever since that night, TOP referred to, and addressed Jun and I as the the Duke Brothers, and we never disappointed him.
Jun today owns his own engineering company, and we are still good army buddies, we never mention the bar fight that night, but our wives know that we were the, "Duke Brothers". Lol

I'll start with the "good", and work up to the "bad", and the "ugly".

The "good" came one night while I was CDO in Slovenia. One of the guys on the pier reported seeing, "a bunch of guys with guns hiding in the bushes". I came down expecting some Eastern-European terrorists... or nothing... and sure enough ,there were a dozen or so shadows bobbing around with AKs and some sort of "uniform" headgear. I figured it was "likely" local authorities, and after a brief moment of contemplation (and an order to my guys to be ready to fire)... walked out a few feet in front of the gate... while one of the "shadows" did the same. Turned out it was the local PD checking up on, wait for it... a "call" about possible terrorists. We shook hands, he secured his perimeter, I secured mine.

The "bad" came one night when a Sailor from our ship got drunk and threatened to beat up his wife. She called, claimed he was armed, and not knowing if he was guilty or not... we decided to get him on board before taking any action. He showed up, obviously four (as opposed to three) sheets to the wind. I had one of my duty guys keep his eyes open for a weapon while I "talked him down" and got him below... where we ended up handcuffing him to his bunk. Can't recall if the wife's call ended up being legit, but luckily, he wasn't armed.

The "ugly" was in eastern Afghanistan. One night, we hear AK chatter, and Boss and I go streaking for the ANA wire with little more than our IBAs and weapons. We show up, and the scared ANA turned and racked rounds on US. Boss had one staring right at him from ten yards, I had my sights on him, and one of the ANA had me from about twenty yards. It was a real pucker moment. Luckily, one of the ANA NCOs (see, they save are butts even when LNs) went around slowing pushing down the muzzles of his guys' weapons. Turned out one of the new tower guards (ANA) had been "involuntarily invited" to some "MLThursday" action, and decided to shoot his way out of the situation. Luckily, the only casualty was the tower which got shot up pretty good as I recall.

I can tell you the most worthless one...
I got to my unit about two weeks after they deployed, so I followed about a month later while I unprocessed and did "pre-deployment training.". During that time, I had the privilege of being the senior NCO left, so I got to play acting 1SG (I still don't know why they didn't have some sort of Rear D established).

Anyway, I got called out to post housing around 0200 for a domestic violence call. MPs didn't want to arrest anyone, but they needed a 1SG to come "sign for" the young SGT.

OK, fine, whatever. I wake my happy butt up and down a gallon of caffeine, and head out to post. I get there, prepared for cuts, bruises, property damage, the works. Nope. The wife had locked herself out of the house and was yelling at the husband to let her in. That was it. "Domestic Violence." The neighbor heard the yelling, didn't bother to find out what it was about, and immediately called 911, because OBVIOUSLY DV.

I couldn't be mad at young SGT. But I was pissed at the "anonymous" neighbor.

When I was in AIT at Ft Benjamin HarrisonI called the OD well past midnight. I told him my brother was in town to see me and would he please allow me to stay with him and report for duty at 0730. I really sold that story! I was actually at a motel, drunk with a male SM and wanted to spend the rest of the evening with him. I don’t know how I managed to ‘pull’ that off without receiving an Article 15 for being absent from bedcheck! Never underestimate the quick wit of a stubborn Irish female with a Batchelors Degree in Psychology!

As a Corpsman (I was also an Army medic once upon a time) when I picked you up it was with an ambulance and when I didn't it was because you were bleeding all over waking the duty Corpsman out of a sound sleep to a nightmare.
I once had a patient come in because he bloodied and bruised his knuckles "running into a wall" - it was obvious he got em from a fist fight but he kept hedging till his buddy looked at me and told him "you can tell him the truth, Doc is the one that started the riot !"

I have a friend first name General Lee ........as a young soldier he called the cq and said he needed help getting back to base ....... Command goes berserk arranging transport for the "General" ........First Sgt figures out what is going on and whisk into town to pick up "Pvt General Lee" before command parade arrive.
General Lee was told to never make a phone call that way again......

Most of mine, military and civilian were of the nature of XXX is broke, and we need you to do something right away. But that's life as an ET.

I did have a few where I was asked to pick someone up by the police as a courtesy. We always had a good relationship with the local PD. in all cases I was able to keep things in house and discipline off the record. We did have one guy we would send a couple of guys from the duty section to drive the road into town around midnight on the nights he went into town. We would usually find him sleeping it off along the side of the road. (He always hitchhiked).

I sound asleep, its 235am in Memphis and my phone rings. It's my younger brother. "What Happened" I ask.
Him: Struggling to put his words together, speech slurred. Is dad home?
Me: WHAT? Its 2am, of course he's home! What do you want???
Him: "I messed up"!
Me: What did you do!?!?
Him: I had a wreck...
Me: So. What do you want me to do?
Him: Don't tell dad.
Me: Okay, bye!
He and his buddies had been out all night partying smoking and drinking. They crashed his car trying to avoid hitting an invisible animal in the road, abandoned his car parked on top to the fire hydrant they ran into. hopped on the train sitting on the nearby railroad tracks. Three of the four in the car passed out on the train and woke up in Texas. He still lives there now, married for almost 20 years. Only comes home to visit, and dad never found out about the accident. He came up with a Fantastic lie about finding himself and a new place New purpose in life :).

I got that call but I had more fun making THAT call
I was the Military Police Duty Officer at Camp Humphries, Korea. The 'ville patrol and I were walking down the main road when we say 2 gi's talking up the local hookers. (They worked a street corner not a bar) Hookers look up and "Bam" they are gone. One of the GIs starts to run, gets maybe ten steps before grabbed up. Other guy is staring at the spot where the Hooker and his money saw just standing. I walk up and GIs try to give me BS statements like they were not doing what I just saw them doing. I am hot and not in the mood to deal with them.
ME: Give me your phone.
GIs: What?
ME: Give me your phone!
GIs (Hands me phone)
ME: (Scrolling through contacts till is find......WAIT FOR IT!!!!!)
(Ringing)
Sleepy Voice: Hello?
ME: 1SG this it the Military Police Duty Officer.
1SG (Former sleepy voice) What can I do for you?
ME: 1SG I have "so and so" and "so and so" detained at (LOCATION)
1SG: WHO? Those 2 are PCSing next week.
ME: 1SG I will be at (LOCATION) for the next 10 mins then I am heading to station and thing them with me.
(about 8 min later) Car comes squealing around corner and stops as Large Irritated PSG steps out of vehicle.
PSG: I'm SFC (Insert), 1SG sent me to bring them to his office.
ME: (Check ID) Ok here is my card, and their ID's and cell phones. Please have 1SG call me tomorrow
PSG: (Stink eyes GIs) Get in the Car NOW!
PSG: Thanks for giving us a heads up
ME: Have a good night.

It was 0200 on a Saturday morning when the CQ wakes me up. I'm told I have a call on a secure line. Oh goody. I always loved these middle of the night calls. So I get up and head over to HQ to take the call. Seems an idiot dropped a TR Tube in the radar van and they wanted me to come out and clean up the radioactive mess they made. I don't decon equipment. I fix things that are broken and/or tweak their performance. I leave decontamination of equipment to the trained individuals.

I was on night shift in ICU, a 2nd Lt. . My head Nurse was Capt Jones. Capt Jones was married to a Capt Jones who was a JAG Officer. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Capt Jones Jag was in charge of JAG for the brig. Nurse Capt Jones gets a call From 2 Lt Brown asking if he could discharge a person from the brig. Will this 2nd Lt Brown was OIC of Brig asking for Capt Jones JAG but didn’t realize he was talking to Cpt Jones nurse. Of course at 3 am Capt Jones Nurse isn’t thinking very clear. She says “ Brown I don’t give a sh-t if you discharge some one have a great night. “. In the morning things cleared up. She told me the story ad said “ I couldn’t figure out why you called me at 3 am to discharge a patient. I am sure the 2nd Lt MP thought I was a dumb ass. The unit was going on a training exercise so they needed the guy out of the brig.” No harm no foul.

I've gotten lots of those calls.

A couple of my more memorable, low key ones...

I sponsored a tech school Amn to his first base, Barksdale AFB, LA. This was the '90s...no cell phone or social media (remember the good old days?). Never could get ahold of him before he graduated. He drove instead of flew to base. Arrived after duty hours on a Friday and didn't know where to go, so he went where he thought was best. Downtown to the bars. Got drunk and asked a police officer for directions to the base...outside with a beer in his hand and a fake ID in his pocket. He got a ride to the PD instead. The Shirt called me at like 0200 asking if I'd sponsored him in yet. After a short discussion he spent the weekend in jail. He wasn't assigned to us yet after all. He was gone in 6 months...drugs (weed and heroin), domestic spouse/child abuse, DUI, and just plain sucked at life in general. A complete waste of DNA.

Vegas is a horrible base for first term service members. Got my first grey hair there. One call was to pick up an Amn on base so she could get to an ATM and get cash to help out her roommate. She'd managed to get a line of credit at a smaller casino but couldn't cover her losses, short a couple hundred bucks. Her roommate, an Amn in my shop, called me freaking out. Picked her up, got her cash, and met a limo at the base visitor center. Two big, brutish guys in suits step out and ask for the cash. Its exchanged and the girl gets out of the car. She was totally fine, sober, and a complete knucklehead for doing what she did. She really thought when they said credit it could be paid back at a later time. Took her months to pay back her roommate. Same base one of my Amn takes a motorcycle trip with his father to Lake Tahoe. They both end up in jail for assaulting a couple police officers which is sorta BS since they were off duty and working as bouncers and my Amn and his dad were just trying to break up a fight. Charges got dropped, but not until after some hefty fines and court fees were paid. That base...DUIs, drugs, hookers, adultery, fights...it never seemed to end. So glad I was only stationed there 2 years.

Lots of late night DUI calls. My favorites were when the Shirt would ask if I was going to go pick them up. Of course...after breakfast. Their F'up isn't my emergency. They can wait. Of course the less fun ones involved injuries and hospitals. Those were always bad calls to get regardless of the time.

Stationed at Marine Barracks, NSB Bangor. I was the OOD and a Company Commander. A LCpl (from my company) on leave in Philadelphia called to tell me he was arrested for murder, and that he did it.

My platoon sgt. Called my at 3am...I yelled into the phone, "If someone in my family isn't dead, this better be a *uckin wrong number!" Luckily he was cool about it.
