Leader's Book Methodology

What kind of Leader's Book do you utilize to track your Soldiers? Also, if there is a good electronic type version that you found useful, please advise. I have tried a couple iPhone/iPad applications but found them lacking.

I like being able to write everything down when it happens, and it helps me to remember everything. Also I can easily reference everything even if I'm in an area where I can't or don't have access to my smart phone/tablet.

I keep a binder with a tab for each soldier. In it I've got an updated PQR, Soldier Datasheet (with things like DOR, PEBD, dependents, etc.), a sheet for contact information, and a page (or pages) of notes on counseling, APFT issues, or anything else that will remind me where to go in their drop file if I need to go into an issue further.

My only concession to electronics is an Excel spreadsheet that I update monthly with the Go-No Go status on Medical, Dental, APFT, and Schools that I can thumb to in a hurry.

But if someone has a good electronic type, I won't be opposed to trying it out!

As I see more and more NCOs coming up in the ranks without this training, this is a vital tool. It doesn't have to be fancy. You must know your Soldiers to train them. Electronic is too convenient and takes away from being personalized.

Although I have been retired since 2006, there were many even then that were trying to digitize their leader books. As I see it, the primary issue with using an electronic device is that you are locked in to a prescribed format which normally is not easy to customize. With the 'old school' leader book, you are free to add whatever 'non-standard' type information that you feel may be relevant based on the situation at hand. Let's face it, one standard format does not always fit all cases.
While high-tech normally receives more 'cool points', it's not always the most practical or efficient.
Either way one chooses, the importance of having one can't be overestimated.
