So what you think about officers and senior enlisted who are completely open and honest about their own personal problems (medical, mental, family, etc) and do not attempt to hide them from superiors, peers, and subordinates? Do you think that's good or bad thing when it comes to his/her ability to be an effective leader and instill respect?

In my opinion, it can be both good and bad. If you are a creditable leader you can share some issues with your subordinates/superiors. Depending on their personalities. But you definitely need to be seen as human and not God like. But I have also seen leaders who share to much or complain too much and appear to be weak.
