Taking care of Soldiers. Folks talk about it all the time, but rarely do they actually do it. I find this trend increasing as the drawdown ramps up. The Army loses good Soldiers and great future leaders because of this.

I know others will hit the usual areas, so I wanted to add an unusual one....Interconnectivity. By that, I mean learning more about how your decisions when accomplishing your assigned mission and leading your people affect other aspects of that mission. Great that you earn the decoration for being the best at what you do within your community, but how did you efforts impact other units and the overall mission?

Not just getting back to basics or technical and tactical skills; getting back to the basics of developing better people!
Better people = Better troops; better husbands/wives; better students; better employees for NG/RES personnel.
You can't yell, "Jump higher!" and expect that to happen. Break down the fundamentals to train on individual task - if its tactical or financial readiness of troops.

Evaluations. The overinflation of ratings needs to stop. With the drawdown and the number of promotions becoming harder and harder to come by, what is the best way to identify potential talent for the future? From 2001-2012, promotions were almost automatic to any rank and now that is not the case, so how do we keep the right leaders?

My one thing would be for Officers to understand Talent Management and the value of the NCO Corp with that. Now, as I say this, I know the NCO corp in my branch needs to start showing it has talent to manage.

If you look at the career path of the Officer, at every Key position the Officer is given a NCO for mentorship, experience, and execution. It is not until the BN command level that the NCO to Officer experience ratio starts to even out. Officers need to understand the value of that experience and empower their NCO partner to make their lives easier. A properly empowered competent NCO is a force unto its own.

How about effective leadership fundamentals rather than surveying different styles and techniques.

At the top of my list otherwise: leads and develops/mentoring - they're connected at the hip.

It would also help to find a way to weed out those who not built for wielding power - the toxic leaders.

Courage to lead by example regardless of political fallout would be an improvement COL Mikel J. Burroughs. Next would be display of respect for superiors, peers and subordinates without showing favoritism or beeing a kiss-ass.

There needs to be improvement across the board in leader ship the biggest change needs to be relationships with your Soldiers don't focus entirely on PT but more so on actual MOS specific skills.
