SGLI coverage ends 120 days after you leave the military. Upon separation or retirement, VGLI becomes an option, particularly for those who may not be eligible for commercial life insurance. Because no medical exam is required, premiums for VGLI may be higher for healthy individuals.

Hmmm, I converted my coverage. I haven't had a situation come up that warranted canceling my policy. Overall, for the premium benefit the cost was pretty reasonable for me, i.e. less than 75 bucks a month. Some financial planners have told me I don't need it, but as soon getting rid of it a person seems to wish they hadn't.
