At .50 an enlisted Soldier, over my 20 year career just the Army Soldiers alone contributed about $65,000,000. There should some retirements with hallways paved in gold around here somewhere for the enlisted retirees. Financial algorithms are used to forecast how much should be withheld from our checks but as laws change, the algorithms need adjustment. DFAS tried to keep the variances low as to have minimal impact to the individual service member. But accounting is all about finding every penny, so if we are owed .02 extra, by golly we are gonna recieve it! I had an E-3 tell me he needed to go talk with the finance personnel because he was sure he had been paid too much. After they looked him up there was an awkward silence and they said "You're not retired are you?" They soon discovered that he had the same first and last name as an E-9 that had recently retired and their pay got mixed up. So an active duty E-3 started receiving a retired E-9's paycheck. It seems like SSNs would have prevented something like this but I guess anything is possible.
