Local San Antonio high school football players under investigation. Should they be charged? Is there any justification for their actions?

Now there is speculation that the referee may have said something to these players and it's the reason why they knocked out the referee.

Even if the referee did say something, does it give the right to these two players to knock him down like this?

What punishment do you feel should be given to these players? Some are saying not to ever let them play the sport again.

Sgt Kelli Mays I saw this the other day, and it definitely looked intentional to me -- there's no way that first kid thought that ref was a player. So yeah. They should be charged, and kicked off the team.

Two players were already thrown out of the game before this. Sounds like a team of thugs. The players involved should never set foot on the field again.

I'm not sure they need to be punished. Is it possible the first guy honestly was going after the play and ran over the ref? The second guy is a little shakier. I saw this and thought ... "That could have been an honest mistake."

That said, if those players are found to have done that to the referee on purpose, I think they should be suspended for at least one full year. At least.

I don't think they need to be punished. It doesn't appear that they weren't going to the POC, but I curious to see what play they were told to run. SSG James J. Palmer IV aka "JP4" I reserve judgment at this time. Their teammates were previously ejected from the game.

They did this after two other players of the team were ejected. Looking at the video, I cannot see how it was not intentional. The official was in the secondary all alone and the first player ran into him like he was tackling an opponent. The second player was not pushed and there were players from the other team in the vicinity. Suspension has already happened but I think there needs to be more with potentially legal implications. I also think the coaching staff should be investigated to see if they encouraged anything. With two other ejections already, it seems like this program is lacking control.

This. Is. Disturbing. I've seen a lot of game film through the years. While the first kid's impact with the ref looked suspicious, the second hit, definitely, did not. Both hits were deliberate. I wonder if this was not "coached." I would expect the players' season to be ended. And the coaching staff should suffer as well.

I would support a permanent ban from Texas high school athletics. Safeties are taught to move around refs. Corners, however, are definitely not taught to spear a fallen ref. Heck the play was a good 5-yds away from both of the perps. Further, I would be examining the "coaching" at John Jay High. Going forward, I hope these kids are enjoying the game from the stands.

Clearly this was a premediated assault against the Ref. He could have sustained permanent serious damage from those blows. Besides parents whipping their behinds, they should be suspended from playing ball, restitution money to the Ref if any Medial services were used, and charged with battery. They are old enough to know better. They need to be taught a stern lesson now or the parents may be visiting them behind bars in the future.

Never play football again - and I don't care how old they are or if the "coach" told them to do it... they are old enough to know right from wrong and this is the consequence for doing "wrong". Then they should be forced to watch "Undefeated".
