Local VA Clinics may be in need of volunteer drivers.

I'm the president of our corporate business resource group for Veterans (or those who support veterans). I am often looking for outreach opportunities in the communities where we do business, and I reached out to our local VA clinic. I learned that for them, the #1 volunteer need is for drivers. Drivers who can take vets to and from their appointments, an hour away, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The commitment from the volunteers is pretty much a full day, based upon the # of vets going, and when their appointments take place.

The VA has vans for the transportation, but they need (qualified) drivers to utilize them. They have some drivers, but not as many as they would like.

I will be sending communications to my resource group about this topic, and hoping to raise awareness of the situation and possibly get some of our retirees to help out.

Do any of you also do outreach in your local regions in support of our veterans? Perhaps consider calling your local VA and see if there is something you can do to help?

The Army has a system called Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS) off of the Army OneSource webpage which can be used to find volunteers and one can specify what skills are in demand. The volunteer then can register their hours contributed. Great system for matching up the volunteer to the need.
