I worked in the medical clinic, the doc knew I was there for only two weeks and let me out early on most days, or whenever the work flow was light. We PT'd, ran our butt off. It is a really foggy area in the Spring, then it burns off as the day goes long. A lot of motivation on this base when I was there. I was asked to stay for a year because I had equal moto...but I couldn't. The trattorias are very affordable but be prepared for a 4 hour, 6 course meal...legit Italian experience. It was my only time to Italy and would go back in a heartbeat. I did get to travel on their hwy and drive a govt vehicle 90 mph legally...so that was also very cool. I wasn't attached to a unit long enough to see if there was good morale, and upward mobility. I would retire there if I could. I do wish you the best...and I'm sure you've found lots of good info from Army wives talking about their experience in Italy online....if not, keep looking. Drop me a line when you get settled in...oh and the wine is magnificent, and I don't drink wine. Hopefully, you will have already found what I said below to be true. Good luck in your assignment.

Although I was never assigned to Vincenza, I have been there many times when I was assigned in Naples, Italy and Germany. It is in a great location, very close to Venice. The local community around Camp Ederle is great, with plenty to see and do, and the population, like most of Italy, are fun-loving and supportive of the military.

There is a little town close to Vincenza, called Nove, where there are some great pottery factories. Although I was not necessarily into that, my wife sure was, as are most women, I guess. You can go into the factory and watch the pottery (vases, plates, bowls, lamps, etc.) as it is made and can buy it at greatly reduced prices. For example, I was watching factory workers put bowls into Bloomingdale boxes with pre-printed price stickers for $150.00 and was able to buy the identical bowl (in the box without the sticker) for around $25.00. Needless to say, my wife nearly broke the bank each time we went to Nove.

Another weird thing about Nove. Every time we went there (and I mean, literally, every time), we ran into some friends we had not seen in several years. We used to kid about it on the way to Nove, wondering who from the past we would run into. We were never disappointed and saw some long-lost friends on every visit. Just plain weird.

Vincenza is a great location to travel from as Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Austria and Germany are very easy drives down the AutoStrada.

I wish you the best in your assignment. I know you will enjoy it and I envy you. Response by COL Jean (John) F. I was assigned to SETAF Vicenza in 1995 and left after six months for the Olympic Task Force Atlanta. During that time we were deployed to Somalia, Bosnia, exercise in Germany....think I got to Venice one weekend and there was a railroad strike. But for those who had free time Italy is a place you may never want to leave. I have relatives there from my mother's side. They showed up at the gate one day, had no idea who they were. Once people knew I had Italian relatives we got much more respect! They love life and work hard to enjoy it, just like my mother's people in France, where she was born .
