So I was in Seattle last week and decided to check out one of their stores that sells pot. I couldn’t believe the number and variety of products they’re shoving weed into. Obviously I wasn’t there to buy anything but it hit me that it would be very easy for a service member to mistakenly invest something that would cause them problems on a UA. Here’s my question...
Given that pot is no longer a burnout drug and can be found in almost any form, does the military need to relax a little? I also had the thought over my 3rd beer that night that there’s a ton more calories in my glass than in those products. As the military continues to struggle with PT failures, would it be better for a soldier to have a piece of candy on the weekend vs having 4-5 beers?

Four words for you fellow Captain, good order and discipline. The military is not mainstream society, nor are we society's petri dish for social experiments. We are expected to be a cut above society and should always be mission ready, mission capable, and deployable at a moment's notice. Personal discipline should not be compromised by any service member, nor should integrity. We are a professional, all volunteer fighting force and those who do not want to adhere to those higher standards of professional conduct should not serve. Typically this is not and has not been a problem for Marines, but we are a smaller branch of service and the hallmark of discipline is pounded in from day one as are other hallmarks honor, integrity, and personal courage. Please forgive the pontification here, but I feel strongly that professional military personnel have an obligation to fulfill their duties 24/7.

I agree with you 100% on our standards should exceed the average citizen, which settles the question on recreational use. But what about the scenario of accidental use? After seeing the breadth of products that exist today, accidental exposure IS VERY possible nowadays. They literally made chips, pretzels, any type of sweet candy, condiments, and even sodas for shits sake. I just don’t know if I’m good conscience I could let a good soldier get out processed because they are or drank something containing pot. Like i said, in the old days you really had to try to get high, but now getting exposed to that stuff would be like catching a cold; wrong place, wrong time. What are your thoughts?
I'm all for it, but that won't happen until there's an effective and cheap test to tell if someone is currently intoxicated and to what level. You can see the legal implications that come from accusing someone of being high when they just have bad seasonal allergies.
As for Soldiers mistakenly ingesting, well you have to show those stores your drivers license to buy and they're pretty clearly marked as cannabis products

I don’t mean mistakenly buy something and ingest it, I was thinking of the scenario where someone is in a social situation. In the old days you had to put pot In Your lungs willingly, but I’d be pretty pissed off if I was munching on some pretzels at someone’s house and found it it was full of pot. I mean I’d be pissed off later...I’d probably be pretty indifferent for a while!

If I'm at someone's house they are aware of my military affiliation. I would expect them to give me a little heads up, don't eat that dude. But I could see the situation and community being different for national guard or a reservist.
Are you and the SFC out of your minds. There was once a time in the military where weed was everywhere. It was a time the act of serving was rough because you had a bunch of Soldiers high every night that didn't give a fuck about anything. I know, I was there. The point about more calories in 3 beers won't come close to what the munchies bring. Why do they give it to cancer patients, not just for pain but to get them to eat. The police have effective tests to determine if someone is intoxicated followed by blood test. I could look at my privates and tell if they were high or not. I just had to wait for the drug tests to chapter them out. It is just a matter of time that nicotine will be banned for health reasons in the military; And yes they now have a test for that because my brother works for a government contractor that has banned all tobacco products and tests workers.
