Fun to watch, however. That Cpl seems mildly indignant when returning the now-unserviceable weapon to the LCpl... "Here. This is the funniest video I've seen of the few, the proud. I've got to admit, it was a VERY nice recovery, even though it broke. Good thing the sling held it together. A fine example of discipline while under duress.
I'd be willing to bet they eventually had some laughs about it later over a few beers at the Club. We used demilitarized M1903s. I remember the sling came loose at the but-end attachment point. Not only did that throw the rifle out of balance, but I was also worried about that sling buckle coming around at a high rate of speed and smacking me in the head. I just marched on and did the best I could, and that is all that anyone can do in a situation like that. I say "good job" to those guys. During training I can't count how many times a rifle was dropped. By the time it came to perform in front of a crowd you had better not drop one. They are maintained for their shine and looks. The wood is probably so brittle and dry by now on all the weapons.
