Medical retirement award, yes or no?

Of the Chapter 61 retirees, how many of you received a retirement award?
Also, if you received an award, did you have a retirement ceremony?
If you would assist me by including branch and Active duty or Reserve component I would appreciate it.

I medically retired in 2013 from WTB. served with no incidents throughout my entire career. Not a single award was given to me. Im almost at my 2 year mark post retirement and still trying to find that answer as well. Should we go congressional is always the thought running through my head although dont have the time and energy for this mess.

Hey buddy I'm recommended go congressional with it. Soldiers like you and many others get over look after leaders over you gotten promoted or better jobs based on the hard work you've Done for them. So please find the energy to fight for what yours but find Congresswomen Tulsi Gabbard to get the ball rolling. :)

SFC Dr. Joseph Finck, BS, MA, DSS - I totally agree with you. I accepted their humble offering, but you are right. We should acknowledge those who can not continue due to medical reasons, and try to make them feel important and help them in their desire to feel good about themselves when life seems so morose. Thank you for enlightening me with what should be instead of what is.

SFC Dr. Joseph Finck, BS, MA, DSS - My viewpoint was tarnished by the FT Riley WTU when I was getting medically retired. The WTU took all the spirit out of me by the time I retired. But you are absolutely right. Give them an award and give them some pride.

There have been several times NCOs spoke about sound alternative courses of actions in training meetings. I always agreed with them because I wanted to reward their passion, buy in, and give them authority. I wanted to share this, but by no means was I perfect. SFC Dr. Joseph Finck, BS, MA, DSS

It immensely disappoints me to read the stories I’ve read here. In my opinion, most anyone who is medically retired should receive a retirement award commensurate with their service and pay grade. If you received a valor or service award connected to the medical retirement and a deployment, those awards should not be “counted” as a retirement award – two different animals. I also believe a retirement ceremony of some sort is appropriate. In some cases, I believe an award should be given to those who are medically chaptered out, provided it wasn’t for stupid reasons. Based on what I’ve read here, leadership has failed miserably.

CW4 Russ Hamilton (Ret) Chief, when I retired I received no ceremony, no award, and only one email from anyone senior which simply said thanks for your service. In my 23 years of service I have received numerous awards and been recognized in my NCOERs as a superior NCO and Soldier.
I thank you for your words and could not agree more. Leadership failure and my last command, are another topic for another day. I miss Soldiers. I miss the responsibility. I miss the camaraderie and especially the service.
