And it's SOP for the Army. We have boards (in person boards) for promotion E-5 and E-6, and for Soldier of the Month, Quarter, Year. I even attended a board for selection to warrant officer. I'm guessing this more "old hat" in the Army than it is in the Air Force.

By the way, when I was attending boards, we knocked on the door three times. I don't know if that's still the expected Army standard. Saying "Ma'am" and "Sir" to NCOs? We definitely are two different Services!
