About the only difference I've seen on the Navy side is the level of butchery and ribald toasts are toned down a lot for the out event. You'll pay a price if you don't gauge that properly. The higher the brass attending, the more prudish the event. That worked until some of the wives figured it out and opened a whole new can of worms. Game on. As you may surmise, the more epic events are held overseas. "I wish a toast to the fire. Not the fire that burns down the shanties, but the fire that lowers...." Oh hell, too many to count. We did 200 actual toasts for the Bicentennial. Only thing I remember was waking up on the pool table the next morning. Heave-Ho corner pocket. Things are too PC these days to party like that anymore; at least stateside. CAPT Kevin B. The dining in is a closed mess where everyone let’s their hair down. The grog is charged and antics begin. No guest speaker, this is the president’s event. The dining out has guests and the unit is on its best behavior. No grog, no Mr Vice. The senior commander is the host. There may or may not be a guest speaker. Usually is. The air is formal and serious.

In the last decade we’ve gone away, come back to, and away from the real separation of these events.
