The design for what it is now came about through a lot of testing. Most of the airmen who were questioned like the new design. Rumors have circulated as to why this particular style was used. Some believe the current reverse chevrons resemble and honor the original USAAF patch during WW2 (see below). Others believed it symbolizes the curvature of wings, and others think it's just a reversal of the Army and Marine ranks.
