Most Annoying Base in the military and why was it so?

I am currently at Fort Stewart, GA, for some training. Shout out to those Dog Faced Soldiers! But I have been to many bases and I have never heard so many bugle calls in my life, this also includes the playing of the 3rd ID song every morning. I swear I have seen people just sprint off when they hear a call because they don't know what to do. So far I have found that this post does 13 bugle calls. Fort Bragg got nothing on this place.

Benning was annoying in that traffic sucked gettin on post in the morning. Only really 1 entrance off I-285 and that clogged up pretty darn quick. And it sucked even worse that the CSH (who I was assigned to) was all the way down on the airfield by the Ranger Batt and Airborne school. If you timed it wrong you could get stuck behind an airborne shuffle for about 40mins.....

I HATE going to Walter Reed in Bethesda. The charlie foxtrot that is traffic there is horrendous. I live about 35 miles from Bethesda and it would would often take me 2+ hours to get home. Then you add that there is ZERO parking, and it makes for my least favorite base.

It was Ft. Riley when one of the Brigades decided to have the muslim call to prayer played all the time on Custer Hill to acclimatize people mobilizing. It went away when the families started complaining.

and now any base that has plenty of streets blocked off for PT and yet still have large unit formations running 6 miles on other streets with posted speed of 35+ MPH which causes backups and delays for those units that PT earlier and have to report to work by 0800. Not to mention that they have a post policy letter that is supposed to ban such formations :cough: Bragg :cough:

When I was at Wright-Patterson AFB, I lived in the dorms for the first seven months I was there (I got there June of '09).
At the time, Wright-Patt was split into three separate areas (two areas have now since merged into one). The dorms were on the smallest part (Kittyhawk Area), which also had the BX, Commissary, post office, etc.
Well, unless you were dorm staff or worked at the DFAC, if you lived in the dorms, you had to leave Kittyhawk to get to your place of duty on the other two areas. Problem was, they looooved to hold exercises once a month, which usually meant base lockdown. This meant you were not allowed to leave one area of base to go to another. Thing was, they purposely never told you if this exercise would involve a lockdown, and only ever announced it when it was actually happening, so there was no giving commanders or supervisors a heads-up.
Sure enough, at least three or four times in that seven month span, I was having to call my supervisor at the office telling him I couldn't come in because the base was on lockdown and I couldn't leave the Kittyhawk Area. I got in good with one of the SF guys at the gate the last few months and he was usually able to give me a quick heads up before they were about to make the call so I could get to where I needed to be, but it was the most annoying thing I've had to deal with base-wise.

Camp H.M. Smith, Halwa, Hawaii (Honolulu) in 1998. I had just reported in to my unit at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and I was immediately put on a special detail to Support Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Every morning I had to drive to Camp Smith and traffic was always terrible when you were heading towards Honolulu in the morning and away from it in the evening. When I got off at my exit it's a nice drive through a residential neighborhood........ UPHILL for approximately 3 miles at the posted speed limit. So It was bad on the transmission going up and bad on the brakes coming down . It was a small Navy/Marine installation speckled with other services. THE MOST ANNOYING PART......... if you are not indoors by 0730 (parking was very bad) and you just happen to be outside when the music starts playing, you have to stand in attention and salute for......... the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard songs. It sucked when it was hot in the morning and worse when it was raining!!!

I wouldn't mind 13 bugke calls after being at Camp Bullis in San Antonio. You never know what they are going to play. In the morning or at night they might play Reveille, To the Colors, Retreat, the National Anthem, or a combination of all in no certain order.

*retired now* But was stationed at Cannon AFB 97-01. Decent base/some great folks to work with, but out in the middle of nowhere. The base is surrounded by cattleyards, feed lots, and a pig farm. So, it always smelled like shyt...the wind never ceased. You were always "upwind" of the smell. Nowadays, folks stationed there call it "Afcannonstan". To each their own...there are unhappy people at some of the "best" bases out there.

Fort Riley is the second worst place I've been to...they say that Fort Riley is the place where careers come to die and I found out it was true. MEBs left and right for dumb stuff. However Aberdeen Proving Grounds had to be the worst place I was ever stationed out of the 5 duty stations I've been to. Its a US Army installation but it caters to civilians rather than soldiers.

Soooo, why is the military tradition of playing bugle calls annoying? Do you understand the history behind the playing of the calls? Perhaps if you looked in to the stories behind the calls, instead of thumbing your nose at them, you'd have a better appreciation for the Army's history and traditions. Maybe you could make it your mission, as a LEADER, to inform Soldiers what the appropriate actions are when the calls are played.

The same goes for the other services. Every base I was assigned to did things a little different.

Yes, Fort Stewart was notorious for all of the calls. You can ask my dad MSgt Private RallyPoint Member when he visited us. Plus singing the Dog Face Soldier song every day! Not to mention the whole "Rock of the Marne" "Top of the Rock" thing. I still remember the first time the gate guard said that to me. I was like "Ok" Rock of the Marne back at you. LOL

LT, this is a perfect opportunity to get in touch with the roots of the Army. Long before every soldier possessed his own watch, the bugle was the only effective means of keeping timely order in the fort or field. The fact that Fort Stewart uses bugle calls is a traditional throwback displaying respect to all soldiers over the last 241 years. Far from annoying, you should use the opportunity to educate those personnel "sprinting" of to the meanings of those calls as the Stewart home page instructed you.

Ok, so my story doesn't really pertain to the any specific post/base. But, it does pertain to bugle calls.

So, there I was...
Driving my kids (Army Brats) and their friends (Air Force Brats) to a function on an Lackland AFB. I hear "Retreat" start being played. I pull over, stop the car, and get out. My kids follow suit and get out. Their AF friends are siting in the car. I tell them to get out and place their hand over their heart. They comply. When we get back in they ask why they had to get out? I told them it was to show respect to the flag. Come to find out AF doesn't get out of their vehicle, they only pull over and stop.

**AT THE TIME**, Naval Submarine Base, King's Bay, Georgia was the worst. There was nothing on base, but in true Navy fashion, they opened it anyway and stationed people there. The base had an ornate main gate and welcome/visitor center and a clinic the size of a 7-11. Then, you drove five miles through alligator-infested wilderness to get to "lower base" where the subs were. Nothing had been built yet. The "base" was basically the submarine tender USS Canopus, a floating dry-dock (USS Alamagordo or USS Oak Ridge), and a really large/old/pockmarked pier. "Barracks" was a WW2 vintage berthing barge with little to no A/C.

Not sure of its original name, but King's Bay was an Army supply dump that the Navy bought in 1982-ish for the purpose of turning it into a sub base. Smart/cool/nice idea, but in Navy fashion, they start moving ships and personnel in before they have anything built. Then bitch when things don't go well. We would have widespread equipment shutdowns due to the swamp conditions (high temperatures and bug life!) and our BX became the only one in the USA that carried Avon Skin So Soft as it was the only thing that would kill/repel bugs. We also had "screen doors" on our submarines as the gnat, mosquito, horse fly population would clog equipment filters! There was no natural or man-made cover, so the intelligent Naval high command would send fact-finder officials to find out where all of the sun-stroke, heat-stroke victims were coming from.

One of the DC dumb asses in their dress blues passed out waiting to be signed on board. He then "decreed" (only because his dumb life had been affected) to the base commander (by phone [as he was too smart to leave the ship...]) to have an awning and "sun shade" constructed. "No can-do. Not enough ships in harbor to warrant the construction so says your manual." He was livid and threatened to fire someone "once he got back to Washington..." Went away and never saw him again. Got a new squadron commander who came from somewhere up North and he actually used his flag rank to improve the base radically. Paved the parking lots to keep "sand storm" dust from blowing everywhere, hired bug spray companies and built a garage to house all of the supply stuff which was sitting outside in the 3000 degree heat.

Even the local prostitutes refused to come on base due to the desert/jungle conditions. One of the newer boats arrived with their gleaming crew and new wives and that captain's wife threatened to have her National Geographic sister come down and film the horrendous "prison yard" conditions. Plus, she didn't like the fact that she was in Charleston and her hubby was in Georgia. Next thing ya know, long weekends are implamented and we're allowed liberal time-off to go home to Charleston. A few wives would pool together and get a hotel room. The local hotels figured out this was a good thing and soon, cheap rooms were advertised and we'd go off base every night. A shrewd CPA figured out how to get that out of the government and the infamous Cold War "FBM deduction" was invented. Basically everything the wives/girlfriends spent was deductible.

The Navy went livid and soon had to pull its head out of its ass and actually make a real base. They started building base housing, expanded the Marine Corps area, built a working hospital, etc. When I left in 1988 they had just finished a "club" that we could drink/eat at. Prior to that we were all relegated to having to drive/walk downtown to hit the clubs there. Shrewd clubs would even come and pick us up. I went back in 1998-ish to visit a shipmate and I was impressed with the changes. But to be fair, it should have been that way back in 1983 when the first sub pulled in.

Naples, Italy as an Air Force member. Stationed there from 1988-1991, congressional delegation toured every overseas military location and deemed Naples as the worst location. I know they have built new facilities at the Capodicino airport but the NATO facilities are still there.

What was the most annoying base in the military and why was it so? That is a very interesting question since I firmly believe that the is a unit at the Five Sided Play Pen (AKA The Pentagon) who has the sole mission of choosing the sites for new bases every morning they report for work then they get blind drunk, put on a blindfold and then they throw darts a giant map of the world and they keep a list of sites for potential new bases. I know it might sound strange but it is the only explanation I can come up with.

For me it was Fort Hunter Liggett. Amazing training but we were in the middle of nowhere. Closest town was Jolon with a population of 66 people.

Offutt was bad in the early 70 time frame. Last thing my brother-in-law said to me prior to basic training was "stay away from any SAC base if possible" Well it not only was Offutt, but I was in the 55SRW Command Post. Did that for about 3 years before shipping to Taiwan! What a change!

Ft Bliss "Fort Piss" in El Paso "Hell Paso". Closest thing to hell on Earth you can get too. Extreme hot weather, sandstorms, and bipolar weather. Don't get me wrong the Freedom crossing and other resources on post are nice but the environment and location make it terrible. On the border of Mexico but can't go and the closest city is Las Cruces 45 minutes. If drinking or catching an STD isn't for you then don't look forward when you see Ft Bliss as your next duty station

Kandahar is horrible. The Poo Pond makes the whole base smell like you went swimming in a Porter Potty. If your down wind from it it smells worst than Death☠️. I got sick due to my tent being across from it until we moved to South Park but still could smell it there!!!!!

Camp Gruber Oklahoma. The ranges are pretty good, but it ends there. It seems like the only PX/BX is only open 2 hours a day. Which just happens to be when you are in the field. No real place off base to go after duty hours. So for fun the only thing to do is check yourself for ticks. Which at Gruber are plentiful and could be used at prize fighters.

Diego Garcia was the place to be if you liked the idea of isolation, mixed with RAIN,sun,sharks,and wind blowing in one direction. The little bar/dance clubhouse was a bonus. That atoll is one ground hog day after the other. At least in the early nineties.

Everett naval base wasn't bad, tiny, so the walk from the bar to the ship was easy, 3/4 mile. PSNS, ship yards,also not bad, damn good mess hall.

My only state side base. Tinker in OK. 18 years ago there wasn't much to do after dark except hit up the on base club. I'm not sure how it is now. I did learn something from that area. I volunteered to do stuff so I wouldn't be one of the several with a DUI. The only other bummer was the 3 gates going in doesn't mean all 3 gates open at one time.

In the '70's congress had a list of bases they were closing down and all money ceased going to these bases. I got stationed at Ft. Dix in NJ for my Drill Sgt duty. It was and probably still is the worst military station in the United States.

NTC Ft. Irwin. 100+ degrees in the summer. Snows in the winter. 37 miles out a 2 lane road to get to the nearest shithole (A.k.a. Barstow, Ca.) The road is lined with crosses for all the soldiers that died on the road trying to make it back to the barracks after a hard weekend in Vegas or LA. How depressing. Oh, and watch out for the State Reptile, the California Desert Tortise. It's a $1000 fine if you hurt one. They make that VERRRRYYYYY FUCKING clear the day you get there. Only upside. When I was there in 05' the O-Club brewed 3 kinds of beer year round.

Fort drum should be on the list. It's like a black hole for any ones career. My husband has been in 10 years and all serving here at Fort drum. Been deployed 3 times and still stuck here. Orders canceled 3 times. They will do what ever it takes to keep you here. They are so slow with everything waited and fought for bah for 3 years. They don't handle paperwork. Worst base in our eyes.

Cubi Point Philippines, worst hangovers ever. I can't tell you how tough it was balancing 8 hour work days with three or four weekends off a month, a paycheck that would last 6 weeks, all in a tropical setting amongst virgin jungle. With all the Liberty I had I found myself laboring to find things to do, eventually I resigned myself to snorkeling, enjoying tropical libations wilts sitting in hammock at a beachside bar, and the occasional road trip to Manila. The on-base E-club was a joke, they actually thought by serving world-class food and making it nicer than a stateside officer club that we would somehow forget we have been stationed in an adult Disneyland. The Navy in the early 90s was a rough place to be.

Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany GA. Logistics command for the MC. So top heavy it's insane. The largest unit on base is the MPs. #2 is the band. They used to have two separate commands, the base command and logistics command. When I was there there was a hanging of the guard for both and we had 4 generals, with all their staffers for less than 500 Marines. Base medical was in a double wide. All while being located in a swamp in south GA. There was a really nice golf course. That got shut down because of budget cuts so it was just a giant field that crazy SNCOs decided to use the tick and snake infested tall grass for creative PT sessions. Not to mention the gators by the pistol and skeet range. I was there about 13 years ago so of course some things changed, but I knew guys that begged to go back to 29 stumps after 6 weeks at MCLB Albany.

My nephew who was an MP did a tour in Afghan where he was stationed in a police station in a small town, the toilet was a board with a hole in it that dumped out the back side of the building. Not many of you can top that shit hole post, lol.

I was recently on the Navy base in Charleston recently. Not only do they have the normal bugle signals but they play the Star Spangled Banner at 0800. All traffic stops in place. I was running late for a meeting, and when got there discovered the meeting started at 0830.

I have been on a number of Army, Navy, and Air Force installations over the years and have never seen this.
