You want that to be current when you retire, or keep the gap at six months max. This is true whether you go civil service or contractor. Having a current polygraph with CI helps. Bonus if you also have lifestyle. If you have JWICS or GWAN now, there is a classified classified site for job postings. If you have none of the above, try USAJobs.gov.
