Moving on to the NSA, CIA, FBI, DEA and more...

Does anyone have any experience with these organizations? I am interested in transitioning into those fields of government service after fulfilling my contract with the navy. I still have three years left, but does anyone know of the best way to prepare for a transition like that? What kind of experience or qualifications should I bring to the table when I apply?

I am interested to hear any information about these organizations or others like, so please share if you have any comments.

When does your current TS/SCI clearance expire? You want that to be current when you retire, or keep the gap at six months max. This is true whether you go civil service or contractor. Having a current polygraph with CI helps. Bonus if you also have lifestyle. If you have JWICS or GWAN now, there is a classified classified site for job postings. If you have none of the above, try USAJobs.gov.

The best advice I could pass on is actually go to their .gov sites and look at their employment opportunities, they do actually list what is available or what they are looking for on NSA, CIA, DEA sites. And there is tons of information of what you can do to prepare for testing, transitioning, etc., just have to peruse through the sites.

And as others have stated keep your clearance up to date and work on completing any education you may need before departure from service, most of these agencies want a four year degree as a minimum for higher positions.

Most of the national intelligence organizations require a bachelor's degree (prefer at least some additional graduate degree studies) from nationally accredited college or university for career employment and advancement. They would prefer candidates who speak one or more relevant target foreign languages. Don't forget the USDOS Bureau of Intelligence and Research and Foreign Service Staff career opportunities.

If you pursue bachelor's degree or graduate studies take advantage of the summer internships that provide an intelligence community security clearance, opportunity to get to know the target agency, and give the agency opportunity to get to know you.

Most agencies post jobs on the website http://www.usajobs.com you can hit that site and do searches based on job series, agency, location etc. Following that, make a list of everywhere you would consider and hit their sites, because not all advertise on usajobs. It is difficult to direct transition, but can be done if the stars align.
