MAJ Private RallyPoint Member 177063

So I was surprised to find out that Vets and National Guard can move into on post housing. I looked for a reasonably priced rental in good condition in Shreveport/Bossier area. Wife found it on Barksdale AFB. As of today, I will be living in a gated community with it's own Armed Security Force. Best part no home owner association. Moving onto a military base is kind of therapeutic after leaving Active Duty for civilian job and part time National Guard. 2014-07-13T14:07:57-04:00 MAJ Private RallyPoint Member 177063

So I was surprised to find out that Vets and National Guard can move into on post housing. The Department of Defense says it doesn't know how many bases offer something similar because almost all military housing is managed by private contractors such as Picerne. Companies with vacant homes on their hands are allowed to rent them at market rates to tenants who aren't military families — giving priority according to a list that starts with single soldiers and ends with the general public — but they don't have to report back with statistics.

Picerne also rents homes to federal workers and military retirees at Fort Meade, but not as many homes as the 254 rented to those groups at APG, reflecting the shifting nature of the Harford base over the decades.

http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-09-09/business/bs-bz-aberdeen-living-on-base-20120909_1_picerne-military-retirees-military-families

• Are only Active Duty allowed to live in housing? Check out our answer!!

The answer is NO--Single/Unaccompanied Military Members, National Guard and Reserves, Military Retirees, Federal Civil Service Employees, Retired Civil Service Employees and permanent employees of DoD Contractors and families are now eligible to reside in privatized housing on Hanscom AFB!!!

So I'm guessing that depending on the post/base it is possible.

On-base living at Aberdeen Proving Ground, without the military orders

No one in Tracie Edmondson's immediate family is in the military, but they live on an Army base.At Aberdeen Proving Ground, that's far from unusual.Civilian federal workers and military retirees are...

Response by CPT Richard Riley made Jul 14 at 2014 2:03 PM 2014-07-14T14:03:06-04:00 2014-07-14T14:03:06-04:00 LTC Private RallyPoint Member 218982

CPT Boling,
As someone who has lived on four different posts (three after privatization) for nine of the past 14 years, with three different privitized companies, there is a Home Owner Association, just run by the Housing Company, with 'Mayors' from each of the neighborhoods from those living there.
Ft. Polk, LA had Picerne, Ft. Leavenworth, KS had Frontier Heritage, and Ft. Jackson has Balfour Beatty. All of whom had specific rules about what could and couldn't be done, both inside and outside the home. Add this to the post rules (Military still ownes the land, the privitized company is just leasing the land they build their homes on) and there any many rules!
Now, I accept these rules, and have tried to live on post with every move (four years in Idaho were not near a base, and our one year in Texas, no housing was available, so we rented), so am not bashing the companies, but know that there are rules.
