As we become a smaller fighting force with more mission sets in the ROMO (range of military operations), we will deploy and require more working dogs then ever before. SpecOps has become more reliant on the ability that dogs bring, and we know the infantry is going to follow. With that said we need to look at sustaining these dogs to keep them healthy and alive if and when injuried. We currently have no true POI type skill set to accomplish this. We have the handlers course, which is a 40 hour get to know your dog, and this is CLS for him. I think we've seen this coming but have not started a true decision point discussion for it. So how do you see this growing as our mission set grows with quicker shorter deployments. We can't and probably will not take large EOD efforts with us to all engagements, so we need to look at solutions for prolonged evac times with limited assets for our K-9 buddies.

I see this as a perfect opportunity for the sister services to work together. I know the Air Force Pararescue Jumpers utilize K9s in their missions. Also, in the time of downsizing the military, budget cuts, etc; we will need to combine resources and knowledge to get the mission done.

Just one problem, as I'm thinking the Army is the only one with a Vet or Vet command. All services are going to require this service in some ability, but sustainment is a key element.

SFC Jolly, the AF has veterinarians but typically not a billet for them and they end up working as public health officers/veterinarians.
