My definition of Bad-Assed. What's yours?

This is mine. The USS Missouri (BB-63). I took this as she pulled alongside the USS Wichita (AOR-1) for an UNREP. The sense of history, and POWER was indescribable. I really felt the ship's presence in a manner I didn't with many others that came alongside.

Since I went through colon resection surgery in 2008 with complications, I consider myself bad-assed SN Greg Wright :-)
The amount of medication and supplements I take helps to confirm that I am "bad-assed" especially the tabs which help produce flatulence :-)
From a military perspective I would say that the A-10 Warthog is bad-assed.
In 2008, I went through colon resection and my bladder was a little higher than expected. When I came to, still on pain medicines. I noticed the color of my urine bladder was purple. I asked about it and learned that my bladder had been nicked as they made the slice to pull the piece of my colon through. Since I have the railroad track scars from mitral valve repairs surgery at Walter Reed it amused me that they wanted to do a "bikini cut".
I was placed on a hard candy and ice diet until my bladder healed a couple days later. Since the hospital didn't sell hard candy my darling wife had to go checking out grocery stores to find hard candy. I had no eaten hard candy since I was a kid :-)

I don't have any images of my recovery from colon resection so I am posting some pictures from Mitral Valve Repair at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in March 2003, that surgery had lots of complications:-)

My late Lodge Brother was a sailor on the Mighty Mo. He was on deck during the Japanese surrender. I'm with you in awe over the history and power of this great ship! Your comment, "really felt the ship's presence" struck a chord bringing me back to the day I stepped upon the USS Arizona's Memorial.

My definition of bad assed......get up in the morning (or whenever) and look in the mirror. The ugly mofo looking back at you while scratching their head in sleepy confusion is without a doubt the BADDEST MOFO on the planet.
My next to this would be those parents who work their asses off to put food on the table and a roof over their kids heads. No life, no hanging out, but they will bust their asses working two or three jobs to make sure that their kid has everything they didn't. They spend time looking over their kids homework, cannot make the games or recitals, but know the score of each game, and "somehow" saw the recital.
I love me some troops, but sorry y'all....ain't none of you who wear or wore that uniform the baddest mofo because of it or what you did in it. You might be "bad" because of the sacrifices you made while in it, or the lives you impacted in it, but nothing that goes on it, awarded to you in it, or bought at clothing and sales makes you bad. Except your PT belt. The belt itself is bad.

Oh My so many wonderful Weapons Platforms to choose from. I love Mighty Mo. Attended a Re-Enlistment on her while she was turning into Rustsicles in the Retired Navy Fleet in Bremerton. Ohio Class Boomer with all those Nuclear Warheads, I got to watch her get converted to dual use for Tomahawks, it was pretty impressive CIWS/R2D2/Phalanx is pretty cool my Son-in-law was a CIWS Tech. SR-71 Handled the Intel off of Black-Bird nothing Faster. I would be hard pressed to say which I love more. I think I love the Operators most of all though.

Mighty Mo is as bad ass as they come. Walked by her in Yokosuka. I have not been as impressed by any other weapon. All business!
I had heard a 16-inch gun could put one of its shells in the barn yard from 35 miles. And almost guaranteed to hit the barn at 20 miles. The shell weighed about the same as a '60s VW bug. Not bad for WW II technology.

Regardless, Roy Benavidez: held his guts in while destroying NVA soldiers in hand-to-hand combat in Viet Nam. Awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions (look him up, you’ll know why he was one of my picks)

Doris ‘Dorie’ Miller: Shipmates, we should all know who he is. A messman (cook, basically) on the West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attacks, he manned and operated a crew-served weapon on which he had never been trained, and used it to down several attacking Japanese planes. Despite not “knowing” how to work the gun, he did it, and did it exceptionally well.

Roy Benavidez embodied the Soldier, and Doris Miller embodied the Iron Sailor. If those two aren’t BAMFs, I don’t know what else is.

I was lucky enough to see her shoot all her big guns in one of her last RIMPACs. She sat at the bottom of a V with ships lined up out both directions. We were the 2nd ship away from her and I fired away with my old 35mm Nikon camera. I caught a few really good shots. Still have the Photos, WISH I'd not lost the negatives. Oh, I was on USS Benjamin Stoddert DDG-22, and believe that was 1990.

Being deployed currently, an army guy who went outside the wire was shot three times, 2 in the abdomen, and 1 grazed his temple. Two days later, asked to be dismissed from medical and wanted to return to duty. Badass.

Anyone courageous to enlist is a badass in my book. However, particular badasses in my book are those who go into infantry-like combat. Navy SEALs, Infantry, Seabees, etc. However, this is not exclusive. If you put your life on the line to save another or do something silver star, navy cross, or Medal of Honor worthy, then you are a total, unquestionable badass. The servicemen who risk their lives to save another are badasses and heroes in every sense of the word.

Extraordinary photo, SN Greg Wright. I'm sure it was an awesome feeling to be that close to such an icon of the U.S. Navy. When was the photo taken?
For me, that "thing" is a person, and more specifically, Medal of Honor recepient COL Ola L. Mize, U.S. Army (now deceased). He received the MOH for actions in Korea on 10JUN54. "Ola L. Mize’s commanding officers did not recognize him when he reached them at their post on safe ground in Korea the next day. Repeated explosions had left his Army uniform in pieces. His flak jacket, according to one published account, was smoking. His face had been burned. 'Who are you?' asked one of the officers. 'Sergeant Mize,' replied the soldier, then 21. 'You’re not Mize,' the officer responded. 'He’s dead.'”
He later served THREE tours with U.S. Army Special Forces in Vietnam. Toward the end of his career, he was assigned as the Senior Army Advisor to the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Birmingham, AL. He was slight of build, and an ornery ole cuss, even then. If he started down the hall people would scatter. No one wanted to be in his line of fire, because he'd "critique" you for just being there! I had the privilege to meet him once in early 1972. Read the Wikipedia article. I think you'll find he meets your definition (or anyone else's for that matter)! This aircraft was designed pre Vietnam era without the use of modern computer design, just the good ole slide rule. The first true "stealth fighter", the first SR-71 flew in 1964 and the Blackbird STILL holds speed records for a manned, air breathing aircraft flying at sustained altitude at over Mach 3. A record set in 1976! It holds the record for transcontinental flight, LA to DC in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 20 seconds, averaging 2,124 mph! SECDEF Robert McNamara had all of the blueprints destroyed. It could literally outrun bullets and the anti-aircraft missiles of its day. The epitome of "bad ass"!

There have been some tremendous weapon systems posted here along with some remarkable personnel.

This is the (now retired) M110 203mm (8 inch) howitzer.
It can fire a 204Lb projectile 23 miles and has a 100m kill radius.
Firepower doesn't compare to that of the USS Missouri, but it is a bad-ass piece of military hardware.

When I last saw Missouri I was Onboard for a Reenlistment of EWC and She was tuning into a Giant Rusticle attached to the Pier, Ghost Fleet, Retired Fleet Bremerton. Probably My "Bad Ass" Moment was probably when they sent Me to SAS (Sealed Authentication School) Nuclear Launch Codes. Scratched My head for a Moment or Two "Why" then it dawned on Me USS California was Outfitted for SUBROC. Submarine Rocket (Torpedo with a Rocket on the Ass) that You can put a Nuclear Warhead In. You don't even have to Hit the Target.

@ SSG (verify 2 see) : I was in from '70 '78 (they stopped issuing after '74 I think) .i was involved in a Military accident and was out on a Temp. Dis. ret. List 2-1/2 yrs.
Went back to A.D. Fall of '80 and they started reawarding them in '81. My 1SG. Told me I needed a star to go on mine. I went to awards and decorations section and they gave me a NDR and a medal with a star and letter to records to have it put on record. Some character told me it should of been a oak leaf.. I didn't argue..
I knew who was right...

There's a very unique Christmas Tree, that's due to be updated soon, hanging in Conventional Maintenance's bay, in the Bomb Dump here. It's a tree made of every piece of safing gear and arming lanyards for every bomb dropped during the most recent deployment of one of our F-15E squadrons here. This year's tree is going to have 5,081 pieces on it, the single largest amount dropped by any F-15 squadron, any model, in the history of warfare. It's astounding to see what 70 skilled airmen can accomplish in 6 months, and is a huge point of pride for the Fighter Wing, and Ammo as a whole.

Agree the USS Missouri, the Mighty MO, is a Naval icon. Impressive photo, SN Greg Wright. Here's my bad ass: the AC-130. Had a friend who flew these in the 1980s. Got a lot of insights from him. Those AC-130Es were very bad ass then with the 105mm cannon. The more advanced AC-130s today are bound to be baddest asses.

I have met and trained with members of Seal Team 6, and Delta, a guy who was in the Ranger hall of fame, and Carlos Hathcock, right off the top of my head. The one bad ass who sticks out in my mind was a Marine whose name I don't even remember. I saw his Bronze Star presentation in the late 1980's nearly 20 years after it was earned. This hard charger had saved his buddy by crawling 200 yards each way under enemy fire, and being wounded multiple times, then he used his own body to shield his fallen friend, and was wounded another couple of times. I remember standing in formation thinking WTF did he have to do to get a Silver Star???

After 15 years in SpecOps.....the term "badass" evokes several images..... (event) They worked several sweaty hours constructing a 50 cal Machine Gun emplacement behind the Federal Prison on a ridge high above the port of St George Grenada.... the plan was to slaughter American troops as they off loaded in the harbor....finally the work was done and the men settled in to await the carnage..... there was a "womp-womp-womp" and the Cobra gunship rose above the ridge..... BRRRRRRRUUP....and the machine gun pit turned into a grave.....that is "badass"..... (individual) CSM "Snake" Hoskins tackled the VC and wrestled him to the ground.... unable to get the live grenade he covered the blast with his body....he saved the command staff..... he lived as a badass and he died a badass.... ( my personal bad ass) I and my platoon was caught in an ambush outside Dau Chaing Vietnam.... they had the high ground....bullets whizzed and cracked everywhere..... we were being chewed up.... SUDDENLY....BBBRRRRRRRR.... there was a big plane....circling overhead.... a stream of red tracers poured out causing the ground to explode.... the leaves of the trees were shredded and fell like green rain..... I never got to kiss that pilot....but for me....he was the baddest ass I ever did not meet

I know what you're talking about with being alongside. We were doing Blue/Green workups in Caribbean. I was working on gear in stateroom and started hearing jets. WTF? Was on USS Trenton LPD-14 and there weren't supposed to be any jets. Went out on the boat deck and there was this huge ship off the port side. Was our carrier the TR CVN-71 and F-18's were doing touch and go's. The carrier and the rest of CVBG are usually nowhere near the ARG, but there she was. Was like looking up at a skyscraper from about 100 yards away. Driving to Williamsburg I'd seen them in port from miles away, but when you get that close it almost takes your breath. I got a shot of an unrep while on float but it doesn't do justice to being up close and personal. Definitely bad-assed.

November 1969, I was the District Senior Advisor to an ARVN infantry company in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. We were hit one night by the 411 North Vietnamese Sapper Battalion. We were getting everything shot at us including the kitchen sink with sappers in the wire. My CO, LTC Julian, released Spooky 41 to support us. Spooky circled our little compound until the bad guys left. Their firepower was devastating!! He was a little DC3 - but that night HE was Bad-Ass!! His picture is above.

I had the pleasure/privilege of watching the USS New Jersey in action during her brief Vietnam deployment. She and my ship were in the same OP area just south of Tiger Island when she was engaging shore targets. Even at a distance, the sound of her guns firing was impressive, and you can watch those 2700 pound projectiles flying through the air, That IS bad-ass.

That's a great shot. The mighty MO was the first model I ever built growing up in Missouri.

My "Damn.." moment, was in 06. We were rolling north on ASR Chicago in Karmah, near Iraqi outpost Camp Delta. I was in the lead vic. we come around this sweeper and there's two Abrams sitting there. One on each side of the road, with the bad side pointing directly at us at 200 yds. Not quite was we were expecting, yet awe inspiring. Quick stop, had a chat with "Crusher". I have some great pictures on a hard drive in a box.

Beautiful ship. As I was doing my annual shooting qualification at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii she was passing by while we were shooting at the 200 yard line and our Range Officer gave the order to ceasefire so we all can watch the Big Mo pass us headed to her final berth at Pearl Harbor. Many years later after I had retired from the Marine Corps I brought my family and my wife's family with her mother who was 83 at that time to see the Big Mo. it was a great tour and an unbelievable day. We got to talk with some of the crewmen who were volunteering and getting her back in shape. My Father In Law would have loved to see her in person because he helped fueled her during WWII and the Korean War. Yes, he was an RM1 during WWII and Korea. Retired from the Navy, then worked at the Pearl Harbor Public Works until he retired from this also. He's with his wife and some of his children with God and the rest of his sailors who served with him during WWII. Thank you sharing your story and this photo of the Big Mo.

1st Battalion, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division in Baghdad. During the "surge, " the battalion reclaimed "Sadr City." Battalion CSM was seriously wounded & evacuated. After a month or so at Walter Reed, he figured he was well enough to return so PAID HIS OWN WAY back to Baghdad & his rightful position.

MP fighting platform. I loved the Eagle mount with the M2 and the MK19 mounted side by side. Whether they were far or near, 1 or many, you had your choice of weapons to remove that threat. And of course, we had M-4, M-249, sniper systems, shotguns, M-203, hand grenades AT4, M-9 pistol and our trusty bayonets if needed. Plenty of ammo, water, MRE's and coordinates of refuel points so we could stay away from the FOB's for days if necessary. And, if you had a good PSG or 1SG you could stay our forever as they would bring you resupplies and the mail.

Although just visually, the first time you see an actual Battleship for real, i can't think of anything that would compete. The first and only battleship I've ever seen was the USS Alabama, now parked in Mobile Bay. Just fucking awesome in the true meaning of that word. I'd have to agree with the original post if we are talking about things and not people. I'd give quite a lot of money to see the main guns fire on one of those.

Which reminded me of the admittedly off-topic comment below.

Something of interest for history buffs and football fans--the "Roll Tide" saying for the Crimson Tide (University of Alabama football team) almost has to come from a song dating from the civil war. The chorus was "Roll, Alabama, roll", and it was about the CSS Alabama. Look that up and you'll understand. I think a commentator made the comment that Alabama's team looked like a "crimson tide" early in the 20th century and that linked to the song in people's minds.

I know I mentioned the Civil War, but can we not turn this into a discussion of how everyone who wasn't there perceives that bit of history? As it usually does. I just mean this as an interesting and admittedly speculative factoid.

any US Military position can brag about being bad assed really - but what about all those jobs out there that never get time off, and still have to deploy to hostile places, like cops, Emergency services, nurses, EMT's, Firefighters and whatnot??
I salute you all as TOTAL BAD-ASSES!
it doesn't matter if you deploy to combat - some of you live in combat every day.

Personally, my vote has to go to Firefighters who still get those deployments and nastiness and have to do that crazy sh*t risking their life every day, all while putting in hours that regularly double or triple what the typical military member puts in. (old school FF put in 24 on, 24 off)

I may have been enlisted when I started, but I earned my Truck Captain rank (Civilian) and I've lead many a man and woman directly into the jaws of hell for the kicks... and because it's one hell of a f*cking awesome rush!

A private in the infantry, who doesn't know quitting is an option, has a lot to prove to his brothers and has no special training aside from using anything available to kill people and break things as his leadership says "go". They will always impress me. Being a father and a breadwinner is honorable. The mighty MO is a technological marvel relevant long after its creation. Indirect fire is terrifying, direct fire is deadly and heartbreaking. The 19 year old father with blood on his flack and a smoking rifle that only stops fighting to say "ok sir, what's our next objective ?" Is bad-ass.

You know, I normally do not used that kind of language in my world, since I have been taught that actions speak much louder than words! I admire the various instruments of war that the US military has at it's disposal, and I have served for many years on submarines which had to ability to destroy all of them. However, I must say that my definition of "BAD-ASSED" must rest on one single person, who in my expeience, which was a marine, part of the security detail on a sub tender, called at my emergency security alarm, who arrived in the nuclear torpedo compartment, after bounding down two ladders and arriving on deck stark naked except for an automatic rifle and a bandoleer of ammo! At my command, he immediately jammed the muzzle of his rifle into the guts of the offending man that I indicated, and growled, "Go ahead, make my day." Now I am aware of the saying as being much overused in todays world, but at the time my blood froze at the young man's tone and ferocity, and I thanked all that I know, that he was on my side of the conflict!! This was the kind of commrade that I would want by my side in any conflict, and in my experience the marines I have been stationed with never failed to fulfill all my needs in the very best manner of their Corps!

My concept of a bad ass is the person who does their best to improve the world even if it's working a job, paying their bills, keeping what they own ship shape, being a good friend and neighbor. Correcting problems without bitching about it. Loving and caring for their kids, bringing them up correctly, not like the kids of these days mostly. Even more bad-ass was watching from 1000 yards astern while USS Iowa (BB-61) let go a broadside, during a UNITAS Cruise in late Winter, 1987. Even that was only 2/3 of the whole Enchilada, because the after battery had been removed to install a helo deck. Even so, it was a sight to see!

(invited by Ernie as his Lady Rita's Good Friend!!) Little did I know!!!! or any of us!! When Ernie got his "Cruise Book!!!" somewhere in it is a "FULL PAGE PHOTO" of KAY!!!!! "WE ALL FLIPPED!!!!!!" If anybodyoutthere!!! has that Cruise book, you know the photo... Blond lady, sporting a "sailor's white hat" and wearing a red jacket!!!!!' that's her!!! We went on to get Married!!! In November, 2001 my brother and I had been visiting and he was leaving for home. As we went outside I happened to glance up and saw what I first thought was a kite. A second or so later I realized that wasn't any kite but none other than the B2 Stealth Bomber headed for our ball park for a flyover of game 7 of the World Series. I don't recall there being any sound to speak of and he was barely 2000 feet overhead. I couldn't help but think God help those on the receiving end of a load of ordnance from one of those. I'm told they execute most of their tactical missions in darkness so those below probably don't have a prayer.

Battleships are brutality personified, but as you said, with the Missouri, the sense of history has to be immense. When it comes to people, though, Simo Hayek takes a lot of beating. He was the actual "Winter Soldier".

But my vote really goes to high performance air. Of course. I wasn't in the Ground and Sea Force so I might be a little prejudiced. From what little I have seen for real, it's like the hand of god reaching down from the heavens to the dismay and destruction of one's enemies. The aircraft is suddenly there, and it's actually reality-distorting that something that big and that fast and so obviously powerful isn't making any noise. The aircraft is suddenly impossibly far away. Then the noise catches up...notice I didn't say anything about munitions- I have never, thank god, seen that up close. Because nobody else can live in our sky.

Where to start? I have been exposed to some real bad asses. One was an unarmed Khmer civilian that, after he made it to safety, came back to where I was in an attempt to plug my leaks as I continued to prosecute the war. He had left the safety of where I had originally directed him, only to come back and give his life to save mine. That was on June 20, 1969 and our camp was nearly overrun. Sir Charles had nearly half the camp before they were driven back. I had been shot all to hell and eventually slipped into a comma. The last thing I remember was the medevac refusing to get me because Sir Charles held our chopper pad and there was still sporadic shooting back towards the camp by some sore losers. As we didn’t have a medic with us, that refusal was my death sentence. Unbeknown to me, after I passed out, another pilot came on the horn and agreed to sit down inside the camp, between the buildings, with a 40’ antena and other unseen obstacles -- in the dark, with no lights, other than a flashlight held by one of my three teammates. SFC Charles Hinson guided him using a PRC-25, telling him to put the nose of the chapper on the flashlight Charles was holding. Twice the chopper had to abort due to automatic weapons fire from Sir Charles shooting at the unseen noise, but the third time’s a charm. The pilot put the nose of the Huey six inches from the flashlight -- as SFC Hinson stood there. SFC Carl Cramer was monitoring from the TOC, where 1LT John Parda was working feverishly to save my life. When the chopper was in, Cramer and Parda ran out with me on a stretcher and threw me on board. The dustoff lifted off safely. While having dinner with Parda and Hinson, 35 years later, I was asked Hinson how they got me out. When he told me I said it was insanity because there couldn't have been more than a couple feet to spare outside the Main Rotor. With a straight face he told me how wrong I was -- there had to have been three feet to spare. I guess the fact that it was in the dark, between obstacles and with people shooting at them was lost on him. Oh, and if that isn’t bad ass enough, my radio and rifle were KIA and my teammates had no idea where I was when the shooting died down. SFC left his weapon behind, armed only with his flashlight, came out and found me. He only got shot once for his effort, but ever since that fateful night his nickname is “Flashlight.” The picture shows roughly where the copper landed. Clearly there was only about 52’ to accommodate the Main Rotor Span of 48 ft 3.2 inches on a huey -- not the 54’ my old teammate claimed. I am here because I was surrounded by some real bad asses -- a ballsy Khmer civilian, SFC Charles Hinson, SFC Carl Cramer, 1LT John Parda and certainly a bad ass chopper crew.

He had to fight the US Army to be able to serve.

Battleship Missouri was an awesome weapon system. It is a mistake not to have such a powerful gun system available to landing Marines and Soldiers and military men and women within range of those enormous guns. Much less expensive than missiles. As an Army Aviator I am partial to the "Largest Can of Whip Ass" on the land battle field, the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter and he older Cobra Attack Helicopter. Best wishes, Larry Dandridge

Never in but served in AFG as Mil advisor, the closest thing I saw up close Apache Helos ! Those are as BAD as they come !

One of my DIs, SSgt. Lamerox,1966 PI, was featured in Look or Life magazine. A couple pages of photos shot during the DR fracas.
He and another Marine were on a Dominican Republic rooftop in '65 drawing sniper fire intentionally.
After each shot he would wave a large red flag (Maggie's drawers) signifying a miss on Marine rifle ranges. The stuff Marine DI's use to be made of!

I'd have to say my military definition of Bad-assed comes down to about 9 men that set fine examples for me: My great-grandfather (had been in the Merchant Marines [the only civilian org that has ever had Veteran benefits]), my grandfathers (WWII Pacific Fleet and WWII Army Corps of Engineers [worked on the airfields in the Aleutian Islands]), My Father-in-Law (WWII Army- survived the Battle of the Bulge), my 3 uncles (Army, Navy, USMC), my stepdad (Air Force Sabre Pilot), my Drill Sergeant Geoffery(?) Jones, my friend and fellow Army Veteran (former Ranger and SF).

I loved my tanks and wish I had one, but those men are more than any machine ever will be.

I've nothing but respect for the weapons and/or technology we and those before us used. Truly what made those weapons bad ass were the warriors that used them. Think about being a us tanker during wwII your given a Sherman and you know that german tanks are so much better that it's damn near impossible to defeat one in a one on one fight. Maybe your airborne trying to hold the line being attacked by armor. How about riding one of the first generation bradleys into iraqi defensive positions. Patrolling in iraq with ieds everywhere. Afghanistan trying to control a country that no one in history has ever controlled. What is truly bad ass are the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen that have taken these weapons and made our enemies regret the day they took up arms against any U.S. serviceman. Oh and the artillery prep that was unleashed on iraq as the ground war started during desert storm. It was truly so bad ass I almost felt sorry for them

6'4 200 lb. Brother-in-Arms nicknamed BIGFOOT (RIP) slips on the icy dorm ledge (don't ask) and falls 3 stories into 3 ft. of snow making a perfect snow angel. We didn't find him for 3 hrs. On the way into the medic truck we asked him why he didn't yell for help. All he said was, "only pussies yell." Busted up real good. 3 months in recovery. Stupid move, no doubt but BADASS!
