My father is a combat vet from the 1-5 cav, US Army. What are some better ways I can find to reconnect him with those he served with?

Just as you posted this question, post all known info on his unit, including dates and his name/rank. With almost 3/4 million Veterans and even more dependents you might get enough bites to get started. As a member of the American Legion, SGT David Reynolds has a great option in his response.

There have been links on here to 1-5 CAV, but that's a waste of time. 1-5 Cavalry is an active Battalion in an ABCT at Fort Hood and you aren't going to find anything there. The regimental association is where you want to go. Most cavalry regiments have an association, just like all the other regiments. This is where you will find information on units who served there in all the conflicts. Attached is a picture from their website showing 5th Cav soldiers from Vietnam during Christmas. Their annual reunion is from 22-24 June 2018 in Charleston WV.

You might visit togetherweserved.com, it is another site much like this but as members join who have the same service times and tour of duty, you receive a notification asking if you know them. Good luck!
