Is your issue a disqualifying disability? think if you cannot deploy, or if the issue is a disqualifying disability, your choice would be irrelevant as regulations, not your provider, dictate if the med board proceeds. I have seen instances where, after the med board process has been completed, the SM was returned to duty, but not before the IDES process was completed. You either have a situation that warrants profile or you don't, the DRs make that call not you. If you want to serve and you have a choice why would you opt for profile? I say this as my sons killing himself to make his profile go away so he can deploy again, and it's a fight. However, I have a permanent profile. My provider wanted to medboard me but after discussing it I am still able to do my job. On my profile it states "If SM is unable to perform all duty requirements except for rare occasions the SM needs to be seen for reevaluation to establish fitness for duty." The way how this was explained to me was that if at any time I feel like I cannot physically do the job anymore I can get medboarded. It also means that if my commander deems it they can initiate the process as well.
