My son wants to become a Navy Diver; thoughts on this choice?

My son has opted to join the Navy instead of initially going to college. He was accepted into a school already but recently decided to join the Navy which I am equally proud of. He wants to be a Navy Diver. My thoughts initially was to have him join another rate and then eventualluy cross over if still interested nowing the preperation for being a Diver requires much building yourself up for. I am looking for a rate for him which he is elligable for many but knowing how the process goes in recruiting he may not get what he initially wants. Mainly looking at good advancement and possibly a good SRB, hope all works out great. Please share some of your thoughts and advice on this topic.

Give him advice but let the ultimate decision be his. You don't want to talk him into something that he despises in a year or two.

The Navy is not a bad option. He can see the world, go to school, and become a more mature man.

Have him join the Army. We do have scuba school, our helicopters are pretty darn awesome, we have big chunks of metal that we call tanks, and we have all sorts ofdifferent levels of "hooah" schools. There is Airborne for those who want to learn to follow the law of gravity, Air Assault for those of us who like playing on ropes, Sapper qualification for those who say they want to build things but also enjoy "un-building", Ranger for the people who should really stay away from energy drinks, Special Forces for those who shall not be named, and MP's get to clean us all up.

Congratulations to your son on his decision to serve our country.
If he is interested in becoming a Naval Diver he should go to the NDSTC website and read the requirements for scuba and hard hat diving.

You should contact a Navy diving specialist as I am no expert. I am a Navy Trained Advanced Scuba Diver, Rescue Diver, Hard Hat/Deep Sea Diver and DMO but only understand a few aspects of the full Navy Diving program.

There are three basic paths: Salvage/Search Diver Operations/Engineer/Deep Sea, EOD or Special operations - Combat Diver. He should speak with a recruiter about enlisting specifically for Diver School. He should also be aware that the Scuba Medical Exam is one of the toughest in the military and Diver training is very hard. If he familiarizes himself with the requirements and trains to reach his goal he will do well.
