Not how it -should- work, but...that's the part time world.

If it's to Iraq/Afghan, you'll be doing a trainup beforehand. That'll be when you know it's legit. The only thing that will cancel the unit deployment is if the COCOM that requested the capability cancels the request for for forces (RFF) through the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Your unit's deployment orders will be a blanket order with the manifest with your name on it attached. This is why it happpens late, they use the flight manifests.

There is a huge domino effect when cancelling a deployment of a unit. Depending on which COCOM you are deploying to will dictate equipment you take, what you fall in on, and other factors like regional items (mosquito nets vs snow shoes). S1 left me off the list, and it took until the day of the flight for them to get their head out of their fourth point of contact and correct their list and generate orders. All others I had them two or three weeks in advance, but we knew we were going a year out. If your leadership says you are going, prepare as if you are. There's no harm in having your affairs in order and your TA-50 packed. You will be kept informed as the need arises. In the meantime, use your Chain-of-Command.
