Here is the whole story and it dates back to the 1800. Part of a freshmen class tradition at west point."We are conducting appropriate investigations into the causes of the injuries," Lt.-Col. Christopher Kaskar told the Times. Kaskar added that cadets were required to wear helmets, though the paper refutes that, citing students who speculate that the helmets became pillow bag stuffing.

The academy in New York state has no intent to stop the annual competition and has described it as a means to blow off steam after challenging summer training.

Kaskar says all of the students have since returned to active duty and no one will be punished for their actions during the pillow fight.
