"Plans to send a warship through the contested space have been rumored since May, but three Pentagon officials who spoke to Navy Times on background to discuss future operations say Navy officials believe approval of the mission is imminent. If approved, it would be the first time since 2012 that the U.S. Navy has directly challenged China's claims to the islands' territorial limits."

We've never stopped challenging the Russians and Them. I've heard the recordings from the Maritime Recon Planes that are bugging the Crap out of them right now. No matter how much things change they remain the same. Flashbacks to what I got to Oversea at my First Duty Station CINCPACFLT Spintcom and Fosic (Fleet Operations and Information Center) watched on the big board constant cat and mouse game.

The only real reason things will be intense is because China has no respect for international law when it sides against them.
I mean really, who builds artificial atolls in some other countries waters and then claims them as their own and establishes a 12 mile limit?
I think that the Philippines, being a fairly weak nation when it comes to their military, was too slow in acting and asking for assistance in stopping this craziness before it got this far.
Its going to be extremely hard to get rid of China now that they have planted their foot in the area.

If they still do it the way they did it when I was in, I can just about guarantee that we have challenged and I know for certain we have several responses planned. This is my humble opinion having served in the Submarine Service for 21 years.
