Don't mistake the salute as an indication of your reflection as a leader. Respect of the rank and position gets you saluted, respect of the person wearing the rank keeps you alive when it really matters.

I told my junior officer something like this: Sir, the final decision is yours. There's Just one thing I ask of you, sir. Remember, our platoon is a team. We succeed or fail as a team, we need to work together as a team, and that begins with us always communicating as a team.

As a young Corporal I once told a promising but overeager young Lieutenant, "Sir, the boys really appreciate you wanting to pitch in, but you really need to quit putting your fingers in the donut (pintle hook) when we hook up the Generator."
