NG Distribution-ISIS Threat

Have any other state NG soldiers received this e-mail? I was forwarded this message yesterday from my Command:

"ISIS has called for "Lone Wolves" to track down uniformed members and government employees and slaughter them either in public or at their homes. Please take the time to check all of your families' and your own social media accounts to ensure that your personal contact info is not on them. Turn off the "current locations" function when using your phone/mobile devices to prevent your apps from automatically checking you in places. Take down any photos of you in uniform, practice good OPSEC, think before you identify yourself as a member of the armed forces! DoD."

OPSEC should be second nature to all but those graduating from boot camp. It's amazing how much info is still out there for anyone to find......

I know it hasn't be sent to my base. I even sent an email to the Wing Security Management Office asking about anything official.

Good advice. It nevers hurts to take precautions to protect self and family. Terrorists use social media as a form of terrorism to get us to react. But, because of the nature of the climate in our society today, one would be foolish to not take precautionary steps to protect ourself and loved ones.

I didn't get it in my email yet. I don't think my state had the funding pay for the postage on the e-mail. These are trying times we live in.

Loose lips sink ships and that has been a true statement with every conflict we've been engaged in since WW1 and beyond. When you arrive in a new theater of hostility and the locals knew months prior that you were coming , there is a problem and we as the intelligent few know where this arises from !

I have seen it. My thought was why bother to issue it. The Guard wants Soldiers to go out and recruit their friends to joint. They want Soldiers to participate in public events. Can't have it both ways.

I remember during my first deployment when we were at Dix an article appeared in the hometown paper that we would be on a plan in three days for the Middle East. We had training scheduled for another two weeks. Part way through that night's training meeting the 1st Army Adviser pulled the Diamond and CDR out. When they returned, we learned our rifle range had been moved to the morning, not next week and the day after we would be hitting our final SRC visit so we could clear post the following day to catch a plane for the Middle East!

We learned our flyout date from the local paper. Great OPSEC!

I have seen this email going around. It is a good idea to always practice good OPSEC, and now with actual Lone Wolf attacks being executed, it is an even better idea. Blend in, stand out, never die always fight!

My Facebook account is secured and obscured. I try not to be too open in a public forum, and I only wear my uniform when I am on duty.

I have seen the same emails and since I tend to carry on a day to day, I would kind of welcome an attack since it might help prove that a real threat is out there.

I fully understand where you're coming from sergeant I've always made it a point to practice opsec and incourage others to as well (not always popular) but I almost feel bad for the first poor bastard who trys to pull some of that crap . . . Almost.

You should also check the website for your name and buddies that maybe on the list also check the pictures because if you look like one on the photo prepare for a nut to confuse you. The website is posted on other threads here. Guys and Gals we went through this in the 80's we survived and we will survive. Stay vigilant and enjoy life with a purpose. Above all we are Our Brothers and Sisters keeper so look after one another. Funny thing President Reagan warned about an enemy uniting us, well it not ET but ISIS will do.

There is a "fake GPS app" that you can install on Android. Works great with Facebook. However, it will advise you that your phone is "hacked" if you use it two or three times in a row. Just reboot your phone. Other than that, works great. Works with Facebook messages, too. I usually set mine to "McMurdo Station, Antarctica."
