China is claiming much more of the South China Sea by building artificial islands and placing weapons systems on them. That has spurred other nations in the area to do the same, including Vietnam. It looks like Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter is visiting our former adversary to finalize some arms deals for defensive weapons in light of the Chinese expansion, according to the Associated Press.

US defense secretary to ask Vietnam to end land reclamation

HAIPHONG, Vietnam (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Sunday he will urge Vietnamese officials to give up their reclamation projects in the South China Sea, making a direct plea after earlier calling for all countries in the Asia-Pacific region to halt the construction of artificial islands.

Seems a non-starter, especially because the Chinese haven't stopped their land-reclamation.
